Video of the week #1 -- the voice of faith

Although the Arab spring has revealed an encouraging degree of secularism in the Arab world, religion remains a potent force in some circles, as this speech shows. My Arabic, while far from fluent, is good enough to tell that the subtitles are accurate.

They're harvesting the skulls of Jews...Silly Arabs, don't they know that skulls have no nutritional value? No wonder they are all starving in Gaza.

I don't think anything life-sustaining is exactly on these guys' agenda.

When I see the criticisms being aimed at the Israelis for pursuing a military solution in Gaza, I always imagine the surreal quality of trying to pursue a rational negotiation with people like this.

As in pretty much all disputes, there are two sides most to arguments and the Palestinians certainly have a point.

But people like this guy destroy any hope that the two sides can ever meet together in any meaningful way to figure out something better than the endless killing, mostly of innocents, that's happening now.

I think the fact that religion now dominates the conflict has made it intractable (Hamas is a theocratic organization). People who think their personal hatreds are the will of God can't compromise.
