Quote for the day -- better off sober
"The fact that a believer is happier than a sceptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality."
Twue, but IS a believer happier than a skeptic? I know when I express my skepticism it makes me sound like a grouch, because obviously somebody's bubble is being burst, but I'm happy as hell.

Individualist, pro-technology, pro-democracy, anti-religion. I speak only for myself and not for any ideology, movement, or party. It has been my great good fortune to live my whole life free of "spirituality" of any kind. I believe that evidence and reason are the keys to understanding reality; that technology rather than ideology or politics has been the great liberator of humanity; and that in the long run, human intelligence is the most powerful force in the universe.

Maybe I'm just mean.
For me the most striking metaphor is Dumbo, clinging to a "magic feather" thinking that this enables him to fly.
I will NEVER forget what a devout Christian friend once said to my wife and me: "I find the more you think about it, the harder it is to believe".
MB: Probably not, but it's part of the image they like to project.
RtS: Which is why religion needs to inculcate suspicion of thinking -- "the wisdom of the world is foolishness to God", etc.
