Meditation #20 -- a number to the sky
The day you came, no troll could desecrate
The time we had, the light, the long aliveness
The end, when my despair and weakness sealed our fate
They say you had no soul to go to Heaven
You are perhaps a number to the sky
They say God tracks the fall of every sparrow
Yet even he ignored you at your last goodbye
But I've no need for God when you existed
A better dream aglow with my design
No beasts, no broken promises, no poison
Your mind and sight were always clear, for they were mine
No grave, no marker bears your name in this world
You are perhaps unknown but to the sky
But though you had no soul as men define it
Still in my dreams and memory you'll never die
Some say each gets the Heaven that he chooses
A Paradise designed for him alone
When I step into mine, you will be with me
And if you need a soul, then I'll give you my own

Some lives touch very few, but one life was touched by this one life.
It definitely was.
I love this sad and beautiful meditation. It could be sung toward my kitty Gatsby who passed in May 2025 💔
Poignant, haunting, and deeply touching, Infidel. Your words carry so much grace and quiet strength. The idea that love and memory create their own kind of immortality is portrayed so powerfully here. Beautiful work!
Paula: That's an interesting interpretation. It didn't occur to me that this could be interpreted as referring to an animal, but looking at it now, I see it could be taken that way.
Mr Shife: Thank you! That's high praise indeed. I have always felt this way. The universe does not care, but it matters that we care.
Like Paula above, I felt that this could be a tribute to a much-loved pet. It could just as easily be a butterfly or a lover.
...Or a mother?
Jabblog: You're right, I see it could be taken that way.
Ricko: Well, I've written about my mother several times, but of course she was human. This particular post isn't about her.
When I read this I thought about Lucy, my departed little Boston Terrier. This made me cry. It hit me hard. It was so beautiful.
This is beautiful, Infidel. It gave me chills.
That was beautiful and sad. Not sure who this was for but it made me think of all the animals that I've had that touched my life.
Leanna: Thank you. It's a great compliment that you found it that powerful.
Annie: Thank you. I did put a lot of work into this one.
Mary: Thank you. It's interesting that several people said this made them think of animals they've had. That hadn't occurred to me, but now I can see why people would rad it that way.
That last stanza gave me actual chills. Honestly one of the most powerful things I've read in a long time.
Thank you! That's a great compliment that you felt it that way. I appreciate it.
