Link round-up for 3 May 2020

Various interesting stuff I ran across on the net over the last week.

o o o o o

Everyone can work from home.  Even a weather forecaster (found via Mock Paper Scissors).

A Yorkshire woman turned a piece of suburban sidewalk into Monty Python (link from Nonnie9999).

Dr. Trump is ready to treat you.  He'll even teach you medicine.

Dumbest sign ever.

Experience an optical illusion, and possibly a migraine.

Some nice photos of Michigan's Upper Peninsula here.

The Smithsonian is offering virtual tours.

Protect your e-books.

Meditation isn't my thing, but if you feel it may help you, here are some tips.

What do you call a group of Trumpanzees? (found via New Witch).

Don't worry too much if you received this blackmail threat.

Gay pride 2020 goes virtual.

Blogger Shower Cap analyzes the conservative brain.

AO3 was created as a safe space, not a money-maker.

Here are some places to buy face masks (most will take some time to ship, though).

It's been six years and the Flint water crisis still isn't fixed.

This specialist is still doing hair, nails, and make-up, and appointments are easy to arrange.

The Black Panthers helped launch the practice of serving food at school.

The cash-worshipers want to sacrifice us on the altar of the economy.

Militant stupidity has a long history in our country, and it's still very active.

"It is a public crime to act as though there were no God" -- Pope Leo XIII.

As Amazon workers organize, the management limits their internal communications.

Yet another survey shows an ongoing decline in religion in the US.  Even among Pentecostals and Charismatics, fewer and fewer really believe.

I'm struck by the blunt language CNN uses to describe Trump's untruths.  I've seen them use "falsely says that....." or even "lies that....." about his statements quite a few times.

From 1992:  A leading Independent Fundamentalist Baptist preacher expresses flagrant racism (the linked video is a must-watch).

The Catholic Church condemns reconciliation with modernity and separation of church and state.

Official coins commemorate Trump's great achievements (gag).

Here are some options if you can't pay the rent.

Cuomo pwns Moscow Mitch.

The pigs ate all the money, but you can't eat them.

"God can heal anything," or maybe not.  Church leaders who down- played the pandemic are dropping like flies -- and others suffer too.

The wife of Maryland's governor scores 500,000 covid-19 tests, while the wingnuts keep churning out bullshit.  It's clear enough who the enemy is.

The pandemic exposes substandard conditions in nursing homes; in one case almost 70 elderly veterans died.

One New Mexico town has had to be sealed off.

Most Americans oppose the rush to loosen social distancing, despite Republicans talking nonsense.

This is no time for moderate Christians to be neutral.

Trump is trying to force meat-packing workers back to their jobs with no legal recourse if they get sick (and Moscow Mitch strongly concurs) -- but many may not show up.  Some unions are already becoming more militant.

Loosening the lockdowns probably won't help the economy much.

An innocent US Army sergeant is now doomed to endless harassmentConspiracy-theory bullshit is not harmless.

The Central Park field hospital is far from the first time that Franklin Graham has expressed bigotry against gays.

He gave his life for..... (found via Hackwhackers).

The pandemic is starting to hit rural America hard, spreading into Trump country.

Arizona's Republican chairwoman encourages anti-lockdown protesters to dress up like healthcare workers to confuse the media.

Florida Republicans act to obscure the state's true covid-19 death toll.  Georgia, already suffering a new viral surge, moves the same way.

Silver lining -- church donations are way down.

If the governor's mansion isn't ready to open up, neither is the state (second link found via Octoberfarm).

This Catholic bishop wants to stop the development of any vaccine which doesn't fit his religion's taboo system.

Self-poisonings are on the rise since Trump's idiotic remarks about cleaning products.

The religious-nutjob leader of North Carolina's anti-lockdown protest is now sick with -- hell, I don't even need to say it, do I?

World leaders launch a joint initiative to develop a covid-19 vaccine, but Trump refuses to join in.

My imaginary friend is more important to the country than the National Health Service.

In Germany, social distancing revives drive-in movie theaters.

Sweden didn't opt for a lockdown, and now it's paying the price.  On the positive side, the country has now completely weaned itself off coal.

Brazil, like the US, suffers from a wingnut denialist president undermining states' covid-19 responses.

Covid-19 is getting a strong grip on Russia.

Turkey's Islamist president stands up for anti-gay bigotry.

India's very low covid-19 death toll (even allowing for undercounting) has focused attention on a tuberculosis vaccine widely used there.

Here's the new "normal" in post-lockdown Wuhan.  Heilongjiang province in the north is China's new viral hotspot.

Like Trump, the Chinese regime responds to covid-19 by whipping up anti-foreigner sentiment and racism.

This is even worse than the bleach-drinking "cure" (warning -- gruesome verbal description).

Take this as a warning against overconfidence.  And the wingnuts are laying the groundwork to claim fraud if Trump loses.

Green Eagle spots an interesting coincidence about the Tara Reade accusation, and points to this skeptical assessment.  And why didn't this come up in 2008 when Biden was being vetted for VP?

Spread these ads around.

Keep an eye on North Carolina.

Internet voting is not the answer.

Every major Democratic demographic group agrees on the best running mate for Biden.

The southwest is turning blue.  Even Georgia might be in play.

Biden has an "old" path to victory.

Our chances in the Senate keep looking better.

Gay pride going virtual is such a moment, alright!

And when it comes to eBooks... I've got hundreds of them, if not more. Reading literally every single day. Deleting those I didn't like and those I won't need. I'm not afraid I'll lose them if my laptop dies. I mean, I can always download them again.

Anyways, nice bunch of links. Will have to get back to it sometime later. Thanks for collecting them all! ^.^

I love the Ministry of Silly Walks post! And those freaky Trump gifs. And the song titles for seniors! (Too close to home).

The geometric reshaping of the box is witchcraft indeed! The Grim Reaper on the Florida beach is brilliant political theatre.

Lots of good stuff here, I'm still browsing. But YES, I like Warren as a running mate with Biden ... the only thing I don't like about it, is losing a woman like her in the Senate. I know that most progressives though, don't like Warren no more, for various reasons, they are also mad at Bernie now for throwing in the towel ... but it is what it is, I'm not going to cry over spilt milk, nor will I hate Sanders or Warren ... Washington is a very complex cesspool of big money, with alot of power ... and it's gonna take alot of work if we want to do better, we can utilize what we have. But yeah, I would think that Warren is a great choice ... I actually like her as the top candidate for President (first choice), but I know many would disagree with me.

As far as Biden and the sex assault allegations ... I'm not so quick to think that he's a woman assaulter or whatever one would call it. I do agree that the woman should be heard out, and folks should look into it ... but I have alot of questions on that, that I won't get into here, because it's too lenghty. And I'm not a fan of Biden either, he was FAR from any of my top choices, and has "establishment as usual" written all over him like a cheap suit on sunday. But ... he is certainly better than Trump on many levels ... you know ... like .... he may give others a listen ... for a no brainer simple example.

Probably the best video I seen recently, had to be the one you linked Spocko on Twitter ... this guy puts it simple and straight, as far as what our government is doing for us during this crisis ... because it's not only all mixed up, but bullshit. And the only reason it's this way, is because too much control over our Congress by big money/ corporations ... they have our politicians by the balls today. I would hate to be a politician in these times under the current circumstances ... you're f*cked if you do, and f*cked if you don't.

This is another great list of links, thanks for the laughs, insights, and other thought provoking items. As usual, I can't pick a favorite because they are all so good in their own right.

AND, What a Surprise! I clicked on "A name change makes old songs into old songs". What an honor to be included in the round-up. Thank you so much for the mention. I love it!

Wishing you all the best!

Infidel linked one of my posts! SQUEEE! (and it's an original BDR! First thing that sprang to mind when I heard Lord Dampnut was signing an EO exempting businesses from liability and forcing the workers back to the plants)

Hi Infidel,

Hope you and all your readers are well.

I don't want to see how proctologists are working from home. Maybe snaking bathroom drains?

If all weather reports featured a cute dog, I would actually watch local news.

I got the new and improved Lysol inhaler with the UV light. Not only am I cured of the virus, but my teeth are whiter!

I loved geometry in school. And the question is, "Why didn't you get invited to prom?"

Sleeping lady mountain is amazing!!!

The orangutan looks like a wise old soul. He looks a lot smarter than Twitler, too. I think he should sue Bill Maher for ever suggesting that he, and not Fred, is Twitler's real father.

Back tomorrow for more. Until then, I will leave you with this offering:

Cats! (You'll tank me later.)

Hot: I don't know about e-books, but there are plenty of things I've found on the net and liked which simply disappeared later; if I hadn't downloaded them I'd never see them again. So it's probably worth making back-ups of your e-books. That's one area where paper books are at a disadvantage -- I have a lot of stuff that would be very difficult to replace if it were destroyed somehow.

Debra: Thank goodness for the internet and the entertainment it offers during such a difficult time -- you're certainly doing your part.

Leanna: Thanks!

Ranch: Mad at Bernie for throwing in the towel? That's asinine. Bernie realizes job one is to beat Trump. I don't know what planet those people are living on. They'd probably find something to get mad at no matter what anybody did.

I hope Biden does choose Warren. She would have been my first choice if electability hadn't been an issue. Wall Street would freak out and possibly swing their support to Trump, but I don't think that would make a lot of difference -- and we can't keep kowtowing to them forever.

I haven't been following the Tara Reade thing closely, but Axelrod makes a good point -- if this were true, it should have been discovered when Biden was being vetted for VP in 2008. Those investigations tend to be very thorough.

Mary K: I highly recommend Biruté Galdikas's Reflections of Eden -- she was the first researcher to study orangutans closely.

Dellgirl: I appreciate your interest -- and thanks for the post!

Bruce: Thanks for finding a picture that so perfectly summed up the situation. The moment I saw that in your comment, I knew I had to use it.

Nonnie: Proctologists might be able to use a drone equipped with a specially-modified camera to visit patients -- but so could perverts, and I don't want to give them any ideas.

A Lysol inhaler might actually help in that it would cause so much lung damage you wouldn't be worried about the virus any more.

If any animal were smart enough to file a lawsuit, it would be an orangutan. Their intelligence and ability to imitate human behavior is so impressive it's almost spooky.

Those pictures are great, especially the one with the tally of mice marked on the tank -- though the one with toilet paper wheels seems like conspicuous consumption these days. But why tanks? I guess it's an elaboration of the well-known cat preference for getting into cardboard boxes?

@Sixpence Notthewiser @Infidel753

Just to be absoutely clear that photo is a Photoshop, not real. It is entirely in the spirit of of what Trump and the Meat Insdustry owners are intending, but I added the graffiti to that picture random picture of the tyson plant I found online. (It is a free font called 'a dripping marker' I found online. )

I should bhave been MUCH clearer about the picture being satire from the get-go! I really do NOT want to add to theproliferation of fake images that lets real NAZIs like this woman get away with it: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/auschwitz-museum-denounces-woman-holding-nazi-sign-illinois-protest-n1198961

(but I'm still thrilled you picked it!)

RO: Last I heard, regular books are still far outselling e-books. They're not going away any time soon.

Sixpence: It's a damned effective picture.

Bruce: Ah, I see what you meant by calling it "a BDR original". I suppose I vaguely thought some disgruntled worker had actually sprayed that on the factory wall. Still glad I used it, though. It's a powerful image and it gives proportionate voice to the outrageousness of what these workers are being subjected to.

Wow - sounds like deaths from this pandemic are being way under reported. I kind suspected Florida as their death toll seems awfully low plus their governor is an ass wipe.

Thanks for the shout out about Nova Scotia, Infidel, and for the other one a couple of weeks ago. Interesting how many hits the funnies get, and how few the tragedies do. It shows how badly we all need distraction from tragedy right now.

Lady M: We probably won't know until after the pandemic how many people it really killed. I'm sure it's substantially more than the official numbers.

Jenny_o: The shooting was a significant event, and a terrible one. Your post was moving, and I thought it deserved more exposure.

Comrade. That's cool -- you did read Bruce.desertrat's comment, right?
