Troll issues
Further, I'm acutely aware that there are elections coming up (in 11 months here, in 10 days in the UK), and disinformation has become a common tactic. I don't have the time or energy to fact-check every dubiously-sourced claim about a politician or party that someone posts in a comment here, and I'm certainly not obligated to provide a forum for views I consider abhorrent.
And remember, trolls -- if you don't like the way I run my blog, you're free to start your own where you can say anything you like.

Thank gawd for comment moderation!
I guess I don't understand why someone would do that, you moderate comments so no one is ever going to see the stupid stuff they're leaving. Lots of effort for nothing. Is it the same people over and over?
I've recently had someone leaving really stupid and childish comments full of innuendo on my blog and had to start moderating, something I've never had to do before. I don't have a lot of readers, so it seems silly for someone to try to reach, what, six people before I delete the comments? Now the comments never appear. You'd think they'd give up.
:::shrug:::
Wow - sorry the trolls are on the loose. I always say to them "Dawn take you, and be stone to you all".
Debra: Indeed, if it weren't for moderation, half the comment threads here would be full of arguing and bickering and I'd probably have shut the blog down.
Ami: I think it's just three or four people using multiple usernames, but it's hard to be sure. There are a few common tells (the anti-Semitic troll(s) always claim to be Jewish, for example).
Sometimes it's hard to draw the line between people who just question or disagree vs the trolls and pig-fighters. I guess they're always trying to push the envelope.
Lady M: Well, I can't turn them to stone, but at least I can make them disappear.....:-)
I don't get a lot of comments, so I don't get a lot of trolls, but every once in a while, one will show up. I'll usually engage with them once, and I'll make it clear that I won't continue to do so. There are some who are stubborn, but the more they argue, the more their ignorance (willful or not) is apparent. I don't recall blocking any or deleting their comments, but that's not saying I never would. I think you are correct in deleting comments that are designed only to distract and not really state a different point of view or engage in reasonable debate.
I wanted to thank you for the link to The Raisin Sunday. I'm still making my way through the links, but I have to say that you had a bumper crop of links to hilarity. I kept waking up the dog in the wee hours of the morning, because I was laughing.
Comment moderation throws me off. I'll check back on a blog and not see my comment. Then my brain starts in. Did you leave a comment or not? Then I might or might not check back again. By the next day, that thought is long gone. Oh well.
The troll that seems to be hanging around my blog and some of the others I visit is promoting some old porn star. Someone mentioned that they think he is in England. I wish there was a way to block URLs.
My antitroll method is to not permit comments in real time.
Anyone may send comments for my blog - VIA EMAIL - then I will decide
whether to publish them, elide or delete.
My blog, my rules.
Omg the trolls!
So annoying. Moderating comes super handy with hose.
XoXo
Nonnie: Their goal is almost always either to force you to waste time and energy responding, or to throw their canned talking points in your readers' faces. Your wise not to engage with them. In my experience, completely refusing to engage is the only thing that makes them go away.
Mike: I understand that the moderation is annoying to some people. Unfortunately, there seems no other way to avoid threadjacking and bickering-fests.
Ole: I noticed you do that. And yes, your blog, your rules.
Sixpence: Most bloggers come to that realization sooner or later.
I hope I haven't been declared a "troll" ... but I recently noticed I'm not getting any notifications of your posts ... ???
BTW, just read about the latest one (via the Professor's blog). So sorry for your pain. Know that there are many of us who are sending loving and healing thoughts your way.
Nan: Thank you! No, you certainly haven't done anything remotely troll-like. The Blogger platform is notoriously glitchy about things like e-mail notifications. I deleted and re-saved the listing of e-mail addresses which is supposed to get notifications about posts -- hopefully that will fix it. See if you get a notification about the link round-up tomorrow morning.
Thank you ... I did get notification that I'm back in your good graces. ;-)
