Link roundup for 19 September 2009

Maybe I should consider New Zealand for my next vacation.

Rita presents a bad song with a serious point.

Bob the Angry Flower has a concise sequel to Atlas Shrugged. Much more on Ayn Rand and modern conservatism here.

Sadly No schools John Hinderaker on Denmark's wind power generation (someone should look into generating power from right-wingers' hot air).

If you use a debit card, keep careful track of your balance.

Bob Fertik has more photos from the 9/12 teabaggerfest.

Don't trust Wal-Mart to develop your photos.

Texas won't give Charles Dean Hood a new trial, even though the judge in the first one was sleeping with the prosecutor.

Forever in Hell looks at poverty under Bush and Clinton.

PZ Myers is once again being barraged with death threats by a religious nutjob.

Must-watch video: Rachel Maddow talks with Frank Schaeffer about the Christian Right (YouTube version of same video here).

Rational conservatives lament the Republican party's drift to the lunatic fringe. Neal Gabler has a blunter assessment (found via Undeniable Liberalism). Rod Dreher has more.

Could Operation Rescue be going out of business? Another bunch of nuts wants to outlaw contraception in Florida.

More teenage religiosity means more teenage pregnancy. And then there's people like this guy.

Alan Street was tortured to death by a mob who thought he was a pedophile. He wasn't.

Liberal Values explains how conservatives misunderstand the Laffer curve.

73% of American doctors favor a public option. Dissenting Justice dissects the fake IBD survey on the subject.

Reconstitution 2.0 cites a real-world death panel case.

Snowe won't support even the pathetic Baucus plan, leaving the Democrats with little choice but to go it alone (and maybe achieve real reform after all).

What does 45,000 mean? This.

Factcheck dissects yet another conservative lie about the British health-care system (found via Parsley's Pics).

The US military continues to extirpate jihadist vermin. Exit Zero has a reminder about Bush's record.

This is a pretty good photo, considering the subject was 13 million trillion miles away.

Yet another health problem is traced to being exposed to other people's cigarette smoke.

The secularism of the baby-boom generation may be changing attitudes about death.

As always, informative and entertaining, Infidel. Thanks for the good start to a Saturday morning (well, we get up late here :).

As we(I) type, there is the 2009 Value Voters Summit taking place in Washington, D.C. (goes to show you how crazy a place it is). Check their list of most "valued" speakers.

I listened to radio interviews with some of the attendees yesterday. They were very happy with the way things are going under Obama, since they already see their triumphant return to power in 2010.

God forbid (pun intended).

Here is a sample of their topics:

TRUE TOLERANCE: COUNTERING THE HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

OBAMACARE: RATIONING YOUR LIFE AWAY

Long lines, refusal of care, months waiting for needed surgeries, rationing of treatments, mandates in support of abortion. These are all results of the health care plan currently being debated and placed in the United States, affecting all aspects of your life from your family decisions, to your paycheck to your tax bill. Is it the role of the federal government to provide womb to tomb healthcare? What about personal choice?

GLOBAL WARMING HYSTERIA: THE NEW FACE OF THE "PRO-DEATH" AGENDA

Cap and trade is about more than saving the planet. It's the biggest tax hike in American history. It threatens to concentrate massive amounts of power into the hands of central government and international bureaucrats. And its ascendancy marks the rise of a new, more subtle challenge to the culture of life.

Ultimately, climate change hysteria rests on an unbiblical view of God, mankind, and the environment. Come and hear how the Cornwall Alliance is pushing back--producing ground-breaking studies on Biblical environmentalism, educating pastors and churches across the country, and activating thousands of Christians to rally against the hype through the WeGetIt.org Campaign. Learn why policies to fight alleged man-made global warming will instead cause hundreds of millions of premature deaths throughout this century, and how human liberty, responsibility, and flourishing are the key to a healthier environment.

SPEECHLESS - SILENCING THE CHRISTIANS

Americans are at a greater risk of losing their basic freedoms today than ever before in the history of this nation. Political correctness and the voice of the liberal minority are undermining the morals and values of main-stream America. Christians are being silenced all across America: in the political debate, the public square, the schools, the workplace, and even in the sanctuary of their own churches. Through video, renowned author and commentator, Janet Parshall, takes you on a journey across the country to meet citizens who have been arrested for speaking out at a public rally, students who are being forced to attend classes that require them to recite verses from the Koran and to stage their own Jihad and activists pushing social tolerance to such an extreme that the Bible itself is being labeled "hate speech."

THE NEW MASCULINITY

Feminism has wreaked havoc on marriage, women, children and men. It is time to redress the disorder it has wrought and that must start with getting the principles and ideals for a new "masculinism" right. Such a "masculinism" will have its dovetailing counterpart in a new "feminism" for they mutually define each other and, in nature, are meant to be complementary. This panel will begin this exploration.

THUGOCRACY - FIGHTING THE VAST LEFT WING CONSPIRACY

"Hate crime" legislation, removal of conscience protections for health care workers, the Fairness Doctrine, groups like ACORN intimidating voters and committing voter fraud, "Card Check" legislation to create a permanent majority - President Obama and the Democratic Party is doing all it can to suppress free speech that they disagree with and that threatens their plans for a "permanent majority" in power. Political pundit Michael Barone calls it a "thugocracy" and "Gangster Government," how real is this threat and how can we fight it?

DEFUNDING PLANNED PARENTHOOD

As many state and local governments are tightening their budgets to weather this fiscal storm, communities are taking a second look at the funding of the controversial abortion corporation Planned Parenthood. Since 1987, Planned Parenthood has taken in $3.2 billion in taxpayer funds. Planned Parenthood has used its money to support candidates who will continue this money stream and to lobby against initiatives such as parental notification laws in cases of minors seeking an abortion. Learn from people, like you, who have successfully stopped Planned Parenthood funding in their communities.

ACTIVISM AND CONSERVATISM: FIT TO A TEA (PARTY)

On April 15th, hundreds of thousands of citizens gathered in more than 800 cities to voice their opposition to out of control spending at all levels of government. Organized in all 50 states by Americans from all walks of life, these "tea parties" were a true grassroots protest of irresponsible fiscal policies and intrusive government. The mainstream media could not explain the phenomenon that anyone would be fed up with Washington, D.C. now that the liberals in charge. We will tell you how it happened, why it is still happening and how you can organize your own.

FAITH, POLITICS, AND THE INTERNET: HOW TO CONTEND FOR TRUTH IN A DIGITAL AGE

Okay... That'll do, I think, to, er, whet your appetite. Start packing, Infidel, you still have a day and a half -- the summit ends tomorrow. As for me, I'm already on my way to the airport. ;)

An ole buddy Russ(US Marines)had the opportunity to spend some time in New Zealand over his 22 year's in the Marine Corp...he describe's it as total beauty. I reckon this is just one more reason to visit! :)

Yes...I stomached through the song Ms.Rita had posted...it was soooo touching...brought tear's to my eye's...made Beck and Limbaugh sound like commie's it was so good! Wonder what happened to that ole classic with lyric's that went like..."this land is your land, this land is my land, from California to the New York Island's...etc,etc...this land was made for YOU & ME ...." ? Sure aint you and me no more...heh?

Man oh man would I be pissed! Concerning that story from Carnal Nation on that goddamn WalMart in Peoria,AZ. First place...I question too much of this so called child porn to begin with, wondering how much of it is blown out of proportion... all across the board...Why? Because our whole bloody nation from California to the New York Island's,from the Redwood Forest's to the Gulf Stream Water's has been acting so lunatic over sex period...I can only imagine these day's what is considered especially by some fundamoralist's as pornographic. I dont know if I could wait for the court...I would feel like putting my foot in someone's ass during the hearing's(my redneck handicap)...honestly.However...a good reward from the court would certainly motivate me to keep my cool.I hope everyone of them SOB's have to pay!...just to set an example...to watch what the hell you do before you start on your goddamn witch hunt's! I better shut up on this. PS:I was having some pic's done a few year's back once at WalMart...and I had to show the photo clerk how to use the processor correctly(she said she just started, bless her heart, probably paying her minimum wage)...she couldnt get it to work right and I was sick of waiting..I asked her to let me have a look at it...she said, she dont know if she can do that, she may get in trouble or somethin...I told her, "Relax..I wont tell if you dont..."she giggled...yep..she had the damn thing ass backward's!

Charles Dean Hood...thanx for posting this because I want to look further into this...I heard something short on it some time back because Collin County is a North Dallas suburb(Lot's of former New Yorker's live there)but it was brief ... about the affair mostly.

"Forever in Hell" on children in poverty ...Bush didnt want to leave any child behind I reckon...heh? :)

Maddow and Schaeffer video wouldnt play for me? I'll try it again later though...only because I really want to hear Schaeffer! :)

"Operation Rescue" donation's down? Maybe folk's are sick of supporting terrorism...heh?

What a picture I would love to have in my home of the Andromeda Galaxy!I would love to share it with Galileo!

Interesting posting from Liberal Values as far as the amount of support from doctor's for a public option.

Have a good un Guy! ..........

As does evolution and the concept of a spherical Earth.

Will that mean no more Republican hanky-panky in public restrooms?

As for me, I'm already on my way to the airport.

To flee back to Poland? :-)

Sure aint you and me no more...heh?

Only if you belong to the correct denomination of the correct sect of the correct religion -- and being registered Republican helps too.

Don't worry, these theocratards are a shrinking minority. They are just getting more and more hysterical and extreme as they realize they're losing any hope of getting back in control of the course of civilization.

I would love to share it with Galileo!

I've often wished that the persecuted scientists like Galileo, Kepler, Copernicus, etc. could see how far we've come since their time. It would mean a lot to them.

The Rushpubliscums are digging, hard. They dig for gold, but the only place they're going is to the septic tank.

We are all too aware of the "values" these wastes of oxygen embrace. None of them are worth a pack of Vitter's diapers.

Thanx Guy for that YouTube link up of Shaeffer on Maddow's show! It was as good as I expected it to be. What we are seeing here I look at personally as the filp-side to strict evangelical upbringing. We all know as Shaeffer explain's clearly how the brainwashing process begin's(actually alway's had in history, even the Taliban uses these method's in Pakistani School's as I pointed out before)and is used as well in other big religious movement's...this is a difficult link to break in the brain-chain. I knew a gal here in Dallas mid 20's who came from a strict evangelical background...and wanted to get away from it because of the punishment's and strict upbringing, and she started siding with a more atheistic view.It was so difficult to break the chain link because it had such a stong mental impact on her since it was done at such a young age. What it is,is basically a "cult" mentality,as Shaeffer clearly state's. He know's better than anyone I reckon...he's been in the heart of it for year's,he is strong and determined. For me...it all has to do with how religion is taught...I believe for a person to have the freedom to believe in any spiritualism if it work's for them, they choose it,and make's them feel good...whether it is real or not...so I AM NOT AGAINST christainity. When I explain the bible to a believer...I point out evolution for instance...because we have evidence of it...I also explain how at the time of those writing's...folk's just didnt know what we know today...they WROTE what they could only comprehend at the time, etc. I explain how thing's like birth control, stem cell research and all they oppose is actually part of working for god,and doing good for the creation and preservation of humanity and the evolution of god's children, sexual gratification is also spiritually healthy as well, etc, some folk's just "choose" to believe in something,it make's life a lil easier for them in tough time's is all ... so my approach to this is different, as you see,Shaeffer believe's in god, is christian, and still buy's evolution and science,it's not impossible. I'll put a lid on it...thanx again.

Thanx! I am enjoying perusing the links. You've compiled a nice mix of different topics.

I am glad to hear that Operation Rescue is floundering & New Zealand is teeming with horny women.

Speaking of raging hormones:
The religious teen age birth rate statistics are no surprise to me. Growing up in a pentecostal church with strict rules of abstinence & no access to birth control...
teenagers in the congregations were always having to get married. I know the Mormon church & the Catholics have the same problem. Their solution to the problem ...to Pray for self control & BTW, NO masturbating while you are at it... really isn't much help. :)

This is so obvious that it would take a real true believer to avoid understanding it.

This sounds a bit like filling a saucepan with water, welding the lid on, and putting it on the stove. I don't know exactly what would happen but it couldn't be good.

You wouldn't believe some of the stuff I've heard goes on with teenagers in Islamic countries. Or maybe you would.

I was thinking Canada, actually (after stopping in Washington for the Value Voters Summit, of course. It's a rare opportunity to see so many, uhm, luminaries of the conservative movement in one place at once.) :)

Hmmm, what would be the equivalent of "luminary" for something that spreads darkness instead of light? A tenebrinary? A nocturnary? A sombrero?
