Video of the day -- the absurd man

I really doubt that Mao Xinyu holds much actual authority -- but the prestige bestowed upon him highlights the corrupt and nepotistic character of the regime.

  1. Makes me wonder just how easy it would be to beat them in war. If Russia is having such a hard time with Ukraine then China might be a cakewalk. We may never know.

  2. I hope we never find out. But by all accounts they have the same problems with corruption and rampant incompetence as Russia does.

The last time the Chinese military had to fight a real war was 1979 (they lost).

  3. Who was that against Infidel? I (for a variety, mainly professional, reasons) have to buy quite a lot of computer kit... A few years ago I decided to boycott the PRC (I'm not spending money on junk made by slaves if there is an alternative) as far as practicable. It is surprising quite how easy this is. I have put quite a bit of trade towards (particularly) RoK and RoC since. The laptop I'm using right now is an Acer from Taipei. I've got the TV on in the bacground. That's a Phillips - a Dutch brand but made in Poland. So... fuck you PRC!

    Ewspecially after antics like this...

I live just outside of Manchester. I really like Chinatown there but it's much more Cantonese than Mandarin speakers if you catch my drift.

  4. It was Vietnam. They invaded Vietnam because they objected to Vietnam invading Cambodia to get rid of the Khmer Rouge. They managed to occupy a few border areas, but eventually withdrew while the Vietnamese stayed in Cambodia, so while they didn't exactly get their asses kicked, they failed to achieve their objectives. That is, they did about as well at invading Vietnam as the US did. It certainly wasn't an impressive military performance, especially considering how much smaller Vietnam is.

The less everyone buys from China, the better -- the situation with Russian oil has shown that it's unwise to get dependent on gangster-states. In any case, high-tech stuff "made" in China is usually just assembled there -- the parts that took the actual brain-work came from elsewhere. Might as well cut out the middleman.

  5. Infidel,
Seems to me in a way perhaps more closely analogous to Stalin's Winter War against Finland. Whatever! Kudus to the Vietnamese beating France, USA and the PRC one after the other. Things like that make me more hopeful for Taiwan. Because you have the added complexity of it being amphipibious (and over quite a lot of open sea). I assume the Taiwanese are investing in very high-tech anti-shipping missiles (if not, why not?) and DC, Tokyo and Soeul ought to be making it abundently clear to Beijing an invasion is just not on. The obvious way to do this is to shift electronic manufacturing out of the PRC.

  6. The Vietnamese have a reputation in the region for being pretty tough fighters. Taiwan has been preparing for a possible Chinese invasion since 1949. I'm sure they're well prepared to attack any attack force attempting to cross the strait. Hopefully the Beijing regime has drawn the right lessons from the Ukraine war. Free societies have much more effective military forces, and the democracies will join forces to help a fellow democracy under attack from a gangster-state.

  7. In '79' Vietnam was coming off fighting Japan (WW2), France, and the US. So roughly 50 years of was. After conquering the South they inherited the war materials, most of it packed in Cosmoline inside sealed and nitrogen flooded containers, intended to last SV over a decade. Complete jets and helicopters stored in pieces. That and world-class navy and air bases.

With the vast majority of Vietnamese trained, motivated, experience and well equipped Vietnam had a major leg up on the relatively untrained and inexperienced Chinese.
