Maybe I'm too sheltered. I've known for a long time that Fox is basically propaganda and not really news, but I never imagined it was this bad.
Notice how, right at the beginning, a ban on discrimination against atheists equates to "hostility toward Christians" -- there is not even any statement that they are the same, it's simply taken as a given. The whole rest of the discussion (about the first three-plus minutes of the video) is in the same vein -- name-calling and bald assertion being passed off as analysis. This really is the kind of thing you'd expect from the North Korean media or the pronouncements of Hamas.
But we should be grateful for the clarification that any effort to stop discrimination against atheists is "anti-Christian". If large numbers of Christians accept the definition of Christianity implied by this, well, that's something we need to be aware of.

It's educational to watch Fox News once in a while, just so one can know thine enemy.
ReplyDeleteFrom the Atlantic, 2014:
ReplyDelete"Fox News is losing younger viewers at an even faster rate than its competitors. With a median viewer age now at 68 according to Nielsen data through mid-January (compared with 60 for MSNBC and CNN, and 62 to 64 for the broadcast networks), Fox is in essence a retirement community ..."
A retirement community of angry, religious white people.
Incredible. The guest speaker J. Christian Adams goes on about how Christians have a right to dissociate themselves from atheists and refuse to hire them because it's in their Holy book. He then goes on smugly about how Christians and Jews have put up with thousands of years of people hating them for their beliefs, so they are used to it by now. He even states that if you were hiring a pilot you would want someone who believes in Hell, implying that an atheist might deliberately crash the plane I suppose. (But didn't the 911 hijackers believe in hell though??) So hating atheists, implying that there is nothing stopping them from deliberately killing people, and refusing to hire them is OK, but hatred of Christians (actually meaning not letting them discriminate) is somehow deplorable. The hypocrisy is so glaring to me, but to them it just seems normal.
ReplyDeleteAhab: I read plenty of right-wing sites for that purpose, but they don't pose as news sites for the general public.
ReplyDeleteShaw: Thank goodness. With programming like this, they must be winnowing down their audience to just the hard core of the truculent and self-deluded.
Scott: Yes, it's astonishing. It never occurs to him that the same arguments could justify discrimination against any group, and that he's actually demonstrating why anti-discrimination laws are needed.
