Unfortunately, nowadays a lot of people would just sit on those front porches and keep on gawking at their smartphones while ignoring the people and things around them.
Always keep things in perspective.
This is true. Apparently, changes in farmers' plowing and irrigation practices caused the extinction by destroying locust egg cases. It's yet another example of a seemingly important (at least in numbers) species being completely wiped out without its disappearance triggering any massive cascade of harmful ecological effects, as we're constantly told will inevitably happen in such cases. Ecosystems are highly resilient, not fragile.

Great selection this morning!
I really do not know if we can get back to a simpler time. Tending to the grill (in the driveway) yesterday, multiple folks walking by. Said, cheerfully, "Happy Easter!" and "Beautiful afternoon!" - people just would NOT respond or make eye contact. Not like this is a major thoroughfare; it's just a quiet nothing of a side street. Yet not even a glimmer of acknowledgement. One older woman, one young couple walking a dog. Don't think there were earbuds and smartphones in use. And I do have that baritone voice that can redirect watercraft. How did we become so anti-social? So terrified to make eye contact? To say... hello?
Side-bar question, Infidel: Why is it that when Obama was President and the markets took a 700 point header, they shut down the markets to prevent a catastrophe, but with Trump causing a near-daily calamity, nary a peep as the markets plummet like an anvil dropped into the Mariana Trench? Just wondering...

Rade: Thanks! It's unfortunate how isolated people have become. Americans have always had a reputation for being superficial in relationships, and I'm sure social media, the pandemic, and smartphones have all made it worse. Casual conversation seems to exist mostly in the workplace, and even then it's relentlessly superficial.
I don't know what the rules are that govern when the stock markets close. The rules may have changed since Obama's time.
Anon: Thanks -- I always encourage people to re-post these as they find appropriate. I don't think most oligarchs read blogs or other non-traditional media, unfortunately.
