Video of the day -- a dying nation
This video is long (fifteen minutes), but the main points are made in the first half of it. China's birth rate continues to plummet toward extinction-threatening levels, and the problem will only get worse in the future. Seventy-five years of totalitarianism have destroyed China's ancient civilization and culture and left nothing but a vapid, sterile wasteland of atomized individuals fixated on shallow status symbols and celebrities, while the stagnating economy no longer offers any hope for most people to rise out of what Westerners would consider abject poverty. It's no wonder young people choose not to have children -- there is no longer a nation or culture worth perpetuating, nor a society that any sane person would want their children to grow up and live in. For all its huge size and its incredible history and achievements, China seems in danger of gradually vanishing from the world.

The total number of people in China dropped by 2.75 million – or 0.2% – to 1.409 billion in 2023, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday. The drop surpassed that recorded in 2022, of about 850,000 – the first time the recorded population had declined since the mass deaths of the Mao-era famines.17 Jan 2024
OK, that possibly suggests an accelerating trend and that therefore 2024 is gonna be even worse but I'm too scientific to extrapolate from two data points. So let's just go with, I dunno, 2 million drop PA. This works out as 3.81 p/m or about 57 in the time it takes to watch that video.
And then there is the population pyramid shift... Do not buy "High Protein" snacks from TEMU because it's gonna be Soylent Yellow.
Also one of the largest groups of immigrants to the UK is from Hong Kong.
Very interesting.
Thanks for sharing this.
Maybe things will change in the not too distant future but I doubt it. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.
NickM: One can never trust statistics issued by the Chinese regime, but with that many young people choosing not to have children, it's clear that the population will start dropping rapidly in the years to come. Of course a lot of countries -- probably most, these days -- have birth rates too low to sustain themselves in the long run, but China seems to be in a class by itself.
From what I've seen of China's hygienic standards, I wouldn't eat anything from there anyway.
One can't blame anyone from any part of China for moving to the UK if they can. If it were legal, probably all 1,409,000,000 of them would go. But I suppose Nigel Farage would have something to say about that.
John: Glad you found it interesting.
Mary K: I can't see these problems changing unless the conditions that created them are removed, which would mean getting rid of that stupid government, which is not going to happen in the near future.
