Video of the day -- not peace, but a sword

A recent dissertation by Michael Voris, head of the hard-line Catholic news site Church Militant.  Listen well -- and if you think he's alone in his views and vehemence, read the comments on the video's YouTube page.  Christian extremists (a minority within US Christianity, but not a tiny one) relish this kind of violent rhetoric, just as much as Islamist extremists do.  They want to destroy us.  Christianity in the US is in rapid decline -- for every person who joins the Catholic Church in the US, six leave -- but it's the most militant who stay, and the dwindling of their numbers agitates them to greater ferocity.  This mentality is what fuels the jihad against abortion and gay civil rights.  It may yet lead to much worse.  The death throes of religion are dangerous.

Update:  Notice that at 3:50 he says, rather emphatically, "God with us" -- a somewhat odd phrasing in context, but an exact translation of Gott mit uns, the motto of the Nazi SS.  Not a deliberate reference to the latter, I'm sure, but perhaps an echo of the same spirit.

Out of all my neighbors I only know one person that actually goes to church on Sunday. None of my family so and I just don't hear about it like I used to when I was a kid. The people from the church down the street even go door to door each year inviting people to church services on Sundays because I guess they don't have a lot of people going anymore.

That the most fanatical and delusional remain longest in any cult.
( and let's face it the only difference between a "cult" and a "religion" is how long it survives plus how many people they scam for how much. Scam enough money from the rubes long enough and ta da one becomes a religion)
The corollary is that as these "true believers" collapse in upon themselves they see those that have seen reason and left as the worst "enemy".
Using Islam as an example (they are all guilty but this is easiest example right now) historically their "tolerance" of other religions as relatively benign when compared with the catholic and "Christian" churches of the time. But even in the Koran any one who forsakes Islam for either another set of delusional beliefs or by embracing reason is deigned to be open to unlimited retribution when compared to one who has never been a Moslem. Look at treatment of Salmon Rushdie who is considered to be a greater enemy than the twit (w) who invaded iraq with the call for crusade coming from his lips.
This is part of what we (hopefully) are seeing within the thuglicans.
The idea of accusing mormon ( see first point on cult to religion) right wing whack job Lee, ted cruz's wing man, as being soft on iran is conspicuously ludicrous.
So it is with todays catholics.
The sad part is the fanatics left at the end retain control of all the ill gotten wealth and power accumulated from centuries of scams, exploitation and pay offs. This gives them the tools to mask their weakness and visit physical/economic/environmental harm upon their perceived opposition.
Much like how the religion of fossil fuels can use accumulated power and wealth to continue to visit destruction upon the environment.

JHC! He sounds like a jihadist for Allah! It's the other side of the same coin.

The horror of this is that we have a fking AG promoting this bullsh*t! (Sorry for the language, but I've lost all sense of gentility when it comes to these fktards! Here's what the AG of the USA is saying:

"[Wm. Barr} warned that Catholicism and other mainstream religions were the target of “organized destruction” by “secularists and their allies among progressives who have marshalled all the force of mass communications, popular culture, the entertainment industry and academia”.

He insisted that “the traditional Judeo-Christian moral system” of the United States was under siege by “modern secularists” who were responsible for every sort of “social pathology”, including drug abuse, rising suicide rates and illegitimacy."

Barr warns against the Judeo-Xtian "moral system?" Does he mean the one where the very religious Xtians tortured and killed other Xtians of dark skin with impunity? The same Xtians who had no problems with beating and killing LGBT people and making them illegal? The same "moreal system" that allowed pedophile priests to molest and rape children with impunity? Barr is infected with a religious brain worm. If we don't kick these bastards out of office this year, we will see more and more of this as fewer and fewer Americans accept this crap!

One long standing view of Christianity, going back to before anyone knew Jesus as Christ, is that it was a Jewish sub-sect primarily concerned with freeing the Jewish state of Roman occupation.

In that context both the call to take up a sword and the condemnation of the Pharisees, who had been replaced or co-opted by the Romans, is more a simple matter of resistance to a real-world political/military threat and less so a spiritual matter. A mandate for a particular time and situation and not a wider call.

This was manipulated by the Romans when they finally co-opted this splinter group, Jesus becomes Christ (Christianity is separated from its Jewish roots)and the limited mandate for violence to free Israel becomes an eternal and world-wide holy call to arms against all who resist.

Of course, once you have a mandate direct from God any and all atrocities are excused because they are only persecution temporal bodies while seeking to save eternal souls.

Debra: I think they are most of the extremists in American society.

Mary: Glad to hear it. That reflects a lot of people's experience.

Anon 9 Jan: I agree with all you've said. In Islamic law, apostasy (leaving the religion) requires the death penalty, and there are people who believe that should be actually practiced even today. Think of the abject intellectual poverty of a belief system which has to resort to threats of death against anyone who stops believing in it.

As to control of accumulated wealth and power, that seems to be a big issue in the Catholic Church right now -- when the inevitable split happens, who gets all the buildings and treasure and the prestige of the institution's name and continuity?

Shaw: Yes, he's preaching violent jihad, for all practical purposes. I've been following Voris for a long time, but this is the most unhinged I've ever seen him.

As for Barr, he's a dangerous theocratic fascist.

Anon 11 Jan: I suppose that may have been something of a contributing factor, but the Old Testament is full of endless stories of God or various prophets ordering murderous and even genocidal violence against people who had the wrong beliefs or practices or were simply in the way, long before the Roman period -- not to mention the commands of death for homosexuals, non-virgin brides, etc. The entire Judaeo-Christian-Islamic tradition is barbaric and murderous right down to its deepest roots.

And people wonder why I've given up Christianity. While I understand that the Catholic Church and Christianity are 2 sides to the same coin,
I hear the same thing from my in laws. How wonderful it will be when " only people like us will be in heaven, no minorities, (only have 3/5's
of a soul FACT) no demoncraps (democrats) no socialistic communists OR communistic socialists ( heard it both ways) they will all be bathing in a lake of fire.......ad infinitum.
My better half does practice her faith (not the faith of her father and stepmother. Charismatic Pentecostal prosperity gospel both ordained "ministers" and we simply agree to disagree. I've attended her church and people are friendly and not overbearing. They feel bad for me but they leave it at that. For the most part they all agree that herr trumpolini was put here by god and we simply have to put our faith in him. And that's where they lost me.....
For some reason commenting on blogs helps me lol. Good luck to all of us. I think we'll need it going forward.

No, I hadn't heard of that -- might be worth checking out, thanks. Hard to believe they held it down to just 158 killings, though.

It’s 158 events..the total number is estimated at 25 million. Here is a link to an old blog of the author..the numbers are staggering g and such violence and revenge. Hard to believe people worship this kind of a god.
I’m watching Game of Thrones, which I didn’t think I’d like, but I do and two quotes stuck out to me last night.
Someone was complaining about "why would god (of their time) do this and the reply was well, that’s the god you’ve got."
And some one else said fear is their power...it’s always fear.
