"All the good [religion] supposedly does is actually done by people, and I think most of that good would still be done by people -- likely the same people -- with or without religion."
SK: That's moving in the right direction -- and I don't believe for a moment that a lot of the other 69% haven't, in fact, had their doubts.
LP: Thanks. Of course, even if religion does occasionally inspire people to do good they wouldn't otherwise have done (and I see no reason to think it does), that would be trivial compared with the herd conformity, anti-intellectualism, gay-bashing, obstruction of medical research, etc., that comes along with it.
Individualist, transhumanist, American patriot, socialist, atheist, liberal, optimist, pragmatist, and regular guy -- it has been my great good fortune to live my whole life free of "spiritual" concepts of any kind. I believe that evidence and reason are the keys to understanding reality; that it is technology rather than ideology or politics that has been the great liberator of humanity; and that in the long run human intelligence is the most powerful force in the universe.
