The horror
As with the Holocaust itself, there are already voices trying to deny or minimize the reality of the atrocities of that attack. Here is a site which exists to compile and preserve documentation of what happened.
October 7 2023 marked the great divide between a new Before and After. Much of the thinking which had been prevalent about the Israel-Jihadist conflict before the attack became irrelevant in the new reality; many old illusions fell away. In particular, all the talk of a "two-state solution", of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, went from being an immoral delusion to simply not being part of any serious conversation on the issue any more.
I addressed that issue in this post three months after the attack. In 2023 the Gaza strip was already, in effect, a miniature Palestinian state, since Israel had withdrawn from it years before. October 7 showed us what kind of threat a full-size state in the West Bank, just a few miles from Israel's largest city and surrounding the capital on three sides, would pose.
To me as a Westerner, almost as disturbing was the immediate reaction that erupted on the campuses and streets of some Western countries, including the US -- a wave of virulent anti-Israel demonstrations and rallies. At that point Israel had not yet taken any retaliatory action -- these demonstrations were not about the counter-attack against Gaza, because that counter-attack had not yet begun. The marchers were purely celebrating Hamas's atrocities.
My initial reaction has been fully vindicated. The contemporary revival of the ancient evil of Western anti-Semitism, which had been festering in the dank dark corners of the internet for some time already, burst into the open after October 7. For centuries the West had persecuted Jews, with pogroms, expulsions, massacres, and other brutalities, culminating in the Holocaust. After the shock of that ultimate horror, anti-Semitism finally became thoroughly disreputable and repudiated in the West -- but now, eighty years later, the Holocaust is passing out of living memory, and the ancient monster is awakening again, fangs and claws dripping with hate, ravening for blood as it ever was before.
The so-called pro-Palestinian movement takes zero interest in the Houthi war in Yemen (which has killed many times more people than the conflict in Gaza), nor in the militant Sunni Syrian regime's attack upon Syria's Druze minority (only Israel came to their rescue). No marches or flotillas for those. This movement is entirely focused on targeting Israel. It is the modern incarnation of that centuries-old evil.
The mainstream media have, as usual, failed to do their job. Not only are they showing their usual tendency to both-sides every conflict, but they report casualty figures issued by the "Gaza Health Ministry" (part of Hamas) uncritically, presenting jihadist propaganda as fact -- and ignoring the standard jihadist practice of putting terrorist facilities in civilian areas, forcing civilians to act as human shields. The leftist political blogosphere, too, has utterly failed (except for a few Jewish blogs on Tumblr) to condemn or even acknowledge the infestation of Jew-hatred among elements traditionally viewed as left-wing.
In reality, I can hardly imagine any other country, confronted with a provocation like October 7, showing the degree of restraint that Israel has shown during its counter-attack in Gaza. Israel is doing to Gaza what the US and British air forces did to German cities during World War II, and for the same reasons, but with far less bloody results. There were cases where just one single bombing raid on this or that German city killed more than the few tens of thousands that Hamas claims have been killed in Gaza during the whole two-year conflict.
Western governments have reacted to the conflict with ignorance and naïveté. In the current situation, a ceasefire and negotiated deal to end the conflict before Hamas is completely destroyed would be as insane as a similar "peace process" in early 1945, allowing the Nazi regime to survive and ultimately rebuild, would have been. Yet this is the default approach in Washington and the main European capitals. I am no fan of Netanyahu, but Israel is lucky to have a leader who strives to ignore the pressure and do what needs to be done in spite of it.

As a permanent addition to your blog reading, I can recommend Unsolicited Opinions, which specializes in detailed, rational responses to various matters involving Israel and anti-Semitism. Ketzele and Elder of Ziyon are also worth reading -- their rhetoric can be harsh, but no more so than the situation justifies. For some general background on Israel, see my post here.

It was an awful and foolish thing.
Well said.
As you say, no nation on Earth would have retaliated like Israel has. It's easily the most measured, ethical and merciful military campaign in modern history. If the roles were reversed, there'd be no Gaza. No Jews alive and Israel would be annexed into Jordan/Syria.
On the subject of protesters, there is a world of difference between the pro-Israel and the pro-Palestine groups. The Israelis are almost always calm, respectful, measured, no hysterics, no screaming, no shouting bloody murder. I have been to a few in London and I am always very proud of just how respectful they all are. The Hamas supporters are often as unhinged as they are ignorant. Did you see the maniac who tore a painting of Balfour at Cambridge? What the hell is wrong with these people? A very large number of them know almost nothing about Middle Eastern history. Otherwise, how can anyone maintain the vague accusation of colonialism against Israel when it's the Arab side that turned down the UN resolution for a 2SS back in 1948 and declared a united war on Israel. Arabs did not want Jews to have a state and chose war over negotiations. It's clear to me who the true colonial aspirants are. But, in university-speak, they are the category of "oppressed" and therefore denied moral agency. Ignorance is only a partial explanation. As with the anti-Jewish pogroms of the past, Jews are not allowed to defend themselves. See a great clip of Scott Galloway (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC2-C_ks1Mo).
I still remember that only hours after I read about the atrocities committed by Hamas on that day, I saw a tweet from someone I respected say, "You know my position--Free Palestine!"
My jaw literally hit the floor. My only thought was, "What?" And then the next day, we saw the rallies for...people to just spew out their glee at what happened. And as you pointed out, Israel had not even retaliated yet.
And of course, now we see people use the word "genocide" as a cudgel while clearly not knowing what the word actually means and ignoring the actual genocide going on in the Sudan. And while I was aware of the slow boil of antisemitism, to see it burst forth like from a fetid boil was...well, I don't have the words. Neither do I have the words to describe my sadness and yes, my rage at seeing people DEFEND the killing of Jews and allies of Jews with, "Well, they were complicit in genocide."
Perhaps the one bright spot is that after the attacks and the belligerent displays of antisemitism both online and off, I saw posts on social media from Jews who said that the people who defended them and supported them were Black Americans and also...Muslims from the Middle East.
Anvil: Certainly awful -- and foolish to enrage a power far greater than oneself.
Liam: Thanks. The Gazans are very lucky that Israel doesn't do stuff like, say, Dresden. I do wonder sometimes why Israel bothers to be so restrained. The UN, the woketards, the sniveling politicians will all condemn it no matter what it does, so it might as well go all out. I suspect that will happen eventually.
I don't know why some "protesters" insist on using tactics calculated to turn more and more people against them -- vandalism, blocking traffic, insulting values that are important to the mainstream, etc. I think on some level they want to be hated and rejected, so they can feel like poor persecuted defenders of truth.
Thanks for the video, it makes some good points.
Marc: I've heard of people like that. It's like responding to reports of some massive Jim Crow lynch-mob atrocity with "free the Confederacy!"
This shit really is just the same old Jew-hatred that animated the pogroms and mass expulsions centuries ago. It's like some kind of demonic possession that always keeps coming back because the demons never go away even as generations turn over. And of course back then they used to say the Jews were complicit in killing Jesus or they ate Christian babies or whatever.
I know some Muslims have been more enlightened, and some black Americans see the parallels with another historically persecuted people. It's one of the rare encouraging signs through all this. The mainstream activist left is useless. They just go on and on about Trump and ignore the issue.
You always have such good information and so many interesting insights in your blog posts. I always learn something from reading your posts. Thank you for sharing this thought-provoking information.
Wishing you all the best, my friend. Have a wonderful “rest-of-the-week” and coming weekend.
Thank you!
They had to know there would be great consequences to attack someone so much more powerful than they are/were.
Well, they know now.....
Infidel... what is your opinion of this recent "cease fire"? Frankly, I have no faith in any of it.
I'll have some observations in tomorrow's link round-up. But basically it seems to be the same thing that always happens when the Israel-jihadist conflict turns hot. Israel was pressured to stop the fight before Hamas was destroyed, so it will survive to kill more innocents later. Hundreds of terrorists were freed in exchange for the remaining hostages, showing the jihadists yet again that hostage-taking is the way to get what they want. Basically another opportunity for a real win has been lost.
Excellent post, as is typical, Infidel. I wholeheartedly agree with your analysis.
Further, I think Trump and Netanyahu are foolish to agreeing to this most recent peace attempt. Just like EVERY other agreement made with Hamas and the "Palestinians", they will use it to re-group, re-arm, and re-trench. It is just a matter of time before they break this agreement too.
The ONLY solution is for Israel to do what Netanyahu proclaimed he was going to do. Hunt down and eradicate every last Hamas terrorist. It is truly sad that the ordinary "Palestinian" people hate Israel more than they love their own lives.
Darrell: Thanks. Unfortunately I think you're right about the ceasefire deal. This is what always happens. The US cavalry always arrives at the last minute to save the bad guys. Israel is never allowed to completely win, and so the conflict can never end.
