An audacious and revealing attack (updated)

Ukraine has just carried out a stunning drone attack on four Russian military airbases, seriously damaging more than forty bombers, many of them capable of carrying nuclear weapons. It's not yet clear whether the planes are wrecked beyond repair, but based on the video footage above, it seems likely.  Here is some more information -- but bear in mind that early reports on breaking stories often contain errors or are incomplete.

The attack is revealing in several ways.  First, one of the airbases that was struck, Belaya, is about 2,700 miles from Ukraine, a distance comparable to the east-to-west width of the continental United States (the chyron in the video above has a typo -- the base is in Siberia, not Serbia).  This is certainly outside drone flight range, and indeed early reports are that the drones were launched from trucks and vans, having been taken across the border and driven across Russia earlier, to sites near their targets.  This tells us (a) that Russia has no effective control or monitoring of what gets sneaked into the country or transported around within it, and (b) that nowhere in Russia is safe from such attacks.  If the Ukrainians could do this, they can destroy pretty much any target they choose.  And it's hard to see how Russia could retaliate.  Its attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure are probably already as vicious as it is capable of inflicting.

Second, this affirms that military aid to Ukraine is one of the best defense investments the West can make.  I haven't been able to find a reliable hard figure for how many nuclear-capable bombers Russia has in total, but the ones just destroyed probably represent a non-trivial fraction of them.  This reduces a potential nuclear threat to the West, just as the Ukrainian war effort has been reducing conventional threats for years by weakening the Russian military.

Third, it's a graphic demonstration of the "equalizer" role of drones, and not only in warfare.  I doubt that, for example, US airbases would be similarly vulnerable -- Russia is notorious for its incompetence in such matters, while Western militaries are a lot better at protecting their assets.  But as I pointed out in this post, the US oligarchical class presents many soft targets, while drones and the means of weaponizing them are widely available here.

As for Ukraine and Russia, this escalation may be only the beginning.  For all we know, there may be more trucks and vans with drones in them scattered all over Russia, just waiting for orders to go into action.  At some point the military leaders around Putin will need to decide whether continuing the Ukraine invasion is worthwhile if it means the systematic destruction of more and more of Russia's strategic military forces.  There must be some limit to the price they're willing to pay to allow one megalomaniac to keep doubling down on the ghastly mistake he made in February of 2022.

Update:  Kyiv Independent is reporting that the planes damaged in the attack account for one-third of Russia's nuclear-capable bombers (but remember that they also have land-based and submarine-based nuclear missiles).  Of course, the main reason Ukraine destroyed these planes is that they're being used to attack Ukrainian cities, but the damage to Russian nuclear capabilities also benefits the West.

Pro-Putin bloggers are going completely bonkers (scroll down to the comments there), predicting that Putin will nuke London or something equally absurd.  Such people have convinced themselves that Russia is winning, so this attack comes as a shock to them.

This post seems like a good assessment of the significance of the attack.

I've seen a few reports that Ukraine is continuing to hit other targets on a large scale.  For example, it's been claimed that this video shows the destruction of a Russian ICBM factory.

I really don't believe Russia will stop the war unless Putin either dies or someone helps him die.

I wonder how long it will be until a drone takes out American targets.

It was an audacious attack--and according to reports, Ukraine did not inform the White House about their plans.

Which is a good thing, because Trump and company would have informed Putin (or Hegseth would have put it on a Signal chat).

Good on Ukraine. They have every right to fight back and to carry out a move like this. They were attacked--and nothing that the Putin apologists on both the right and the left say will change that.

This is remarkable—and could have major impact if the report’s details hold up. It would certainly do what the commenter said: weaken Russia’s purported superiority in forthcoming negotiations. May it finally awaken the Russian people to the extent of Putin’s sadistic folly!

Ami: That could well be the case. If the Russian military ever concludes that the war is too damaging or dangerous to continue, I don't think they'll politely ask Putin to stop. Much more likely he'll be assassinated.

Marc: Clearly the Ukrainians understood that Trump's support is at best mercurial, and that the gaggle of incompetents in his cabinet can't be trusted to keep anything secret. They might not even have told France or the UK, given the risk that they might have felt obligated to share it with the US.

Russia attacked Ukraine without provocation, but Russian propagandists and apologists seem outraged whenever Ukraine actually tries to win the war that was forced on it. Certainly military airbases are legitimate targets, unlike the civilians who are the main victims of Russian missile and bomb attacks.

Annie: I've seen claims that the planes hit in this attack were about a third of all of Russia's strategic bombers -- and that many of the other two-thirds are non-functional due to lack of parts and other effects of sanctions. Also, Russia has been able to manufacture very few heavy bombers since the break-up of the USSR, so they will not be able to replace these. If all this is true, it's a devastating blow to their military power. Unfortunately I don't know how much the Russian people will grasp the significance of it, given the regime's control over the media.

I had just seen something about this on Twitter.

For an event of such importance, there's been surprisingly little coverage of it.

The fact that drones were launched from inside Russia says a lot about how vulnerable and unguarded things are over there.

This isn’t just a military win for Ukraine; it’s a wake-up call for Russia and a clear sign that Western support for Ukraine is actually paying off big time. Things could escalate fast from here.

Ukraine really pulled off something massive here. Hitting four Russian airbases and damaging over 40 bombers, including nuclear-capable ones, is a huge deal. What’s wild is that one of the bases, Belaya, is deep in Siberia like 2,700 miles from Ukraine.

Exactly so. I'm hoping that the sheer humiliation of falling prey to such an attack, and what it implies for what could happen to Russia if the war continues, will force a change in policy or even leadership.

Glad our SCROTUS (So Called Ruler Of The United States) can't take credit for any of this advance.

I listened to Keith Olbermann's podcast this morning. He did a segment on this attack. Apparently, Zelynskyy had been planning it for a while (certainly while he was being berated by Vance in the Oval Office)... and the US was not included in the discussions or given a heads up. Hmmm... I wonder why?

I bet Zelensky was thinking about the plans for this operation when Trump told him "you don't have any cards". It must have been hard for him to hold back from saying "wait and see, jackass".

It was a brilliant attack by Ukraine. To seriously damage 40 nuclear bombers after secretly smuggling bombs into Russia (even Siberia!) is quite an achievement and must have really rattled Putin for a while.

It was a brilliant military innovation, like Israel's exploding-pager attack on the jihadists. And I'm betting Putin is still feeling rattled. He had no idea what he was getting into when he attacked Ukraine.
