Link round-up for 5 July 2015

I am no man.

Reddittards contemplate the conquest of New Zealand.

Wow, flamingos are tough.

Speaking of New Zealand, this is actually a good idea.

Yikes!  Well, they did warn us.

Not all Arab women are demure, devout, and submissive (but that's a generic flag bearing the Muslim creed, not an ISIS flag).

Language is in decline, and always has been.

Listen to your betters.

Get the real facts about the Greek crisis.

An Australian woman remembers her favorite job.

Today is the fiftieth anniversary of the Canadian flag.

The Pope denounces weapons-makers and then says that the Allies in World War II should have bombed the railways leading to Auschwitz.  Bombs are weapons, dumbass.

Most Americans support the ACA and gay-marriage rulings, though the Catholic Church is in a snit.

These people exist.

Republic of Gilead reports on an "ex-gay" conference.

I endorse this idea about mass killers (found via Earth-bound Misfit) -- and please note that the ancient Greeks did too.

Rising university costs are a big problem, but some students have figured out a solution.

If it weren't for the South, we'd be a (more) normal country.  But Republicans are largely the party of the South, and that's not going to change soon (found via Progressive Eruptions), though there are small signs of progress (found via Fair and Unbalanced).  But to win, our side still needs to fight intelligently.

The latest stupid anti-gay video ad already has a parody version.

Try this quiz to find out how closely you align with various Presidential candidates (my results are below).

Donald Trump is finding his natural constituency.  Hint:  it's not Mexicans.

Here are a few basic questions on gay marriage (found via Republic of Gilead).

This person will vote next year -- will you?

Green Eagle has another round-up of conservative lunacy.

The Catholic Church is floundering in Australia, for the same reasons as elsewhere.

Iceland has abolished its laws against blasphemy.  Here are some places to try out your Icelandic blaspheming skills, provided you can pronounce names like Eyjafjallajokull and Grundarfjoerdur.

TYWKIWDBI reports from a Sanders rally in Wisconsin. Here's how Hillary and Bernie stack up with Democrats nationally.

Fox News is not getting its money's worth here.

The US gay-marriage ruling has triggered a debate on gay rights -- in Iran.

Green Eagle looks at the latest insanity concerning Gaza.

Here's more on what the Confederacy was really about.

Bitcoin isn't the future of money.  It isn't even money.

[A note:  This round-up is my 3,000th post.]

  1. Congrats on 3000 posts. I thought I was doing well to top 1000. :-)

  2. Congratulations on the 3000 posts! This is another fine selection, by the way. I particularly enjoyed the one about the yahoos taking over New Zealand due to their gaming skills. It gives me hope of taking over the world, being quite good at playing Parker Brothers' "Risk"....

  3. 3000 posts and going strong! I posted your "I'm with stupid" photo on my blog today, with attribution. It's hilarious.

Loved the parody of the anti-gay video. I may have to steal that too!

  4. Thanks for linking to my Canada Day post. That written, this year is the 50th anniversary of the Maple Leaf Flag. The actual birthday was February 15th, which is Canadian Flag Day.

All I have to say about the Red Pill Redditors mounting an invasion of New Zealand using their first-person shooter skills is that they don't even have the smarts of Anonymous when they took on Scientology. Then again, if they actually used Anonymous's tactics from Operation Chanology, they'd likely make things worse, with the New Zealand government being able to point to them and say "see, the trolls really are dangerous!" Instead, the MRAs are just ridiculous.

As for Trump, his bloviating may be alienating both business and Latinos, but it's enough to put him in second among GOP primary voters both in critical early states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and Michigan and nationwide. As I wrote in a comment to that Examiner.com article, "Trump as one of the four most popular candidates, along with Scott Walker, Jeb Bush, and Ben Carson, certainly speaks volumes about both the average Republican primary voter and the inability of the party to maintain discipline. It's that last that indicates the party's real problems."

  5. Thanks everyone! To be honest, a lot of my early posts when this blog was starting out were just one-liners linking to something, which inflates the total number of posts somewhat. I started the link round-ups partly to consolidate those.

I don't see the "Redditor army" ever being a threat to anything except Cheeto availability in their local supermarkets, much less an entire country.

The fact that Trump's vulgar bigoted bloviating is polling so well among Republican primary voters reflects the fact that those voters, who will choose the Republican nominee (even though it probably won't be Trump), are far out of synch with most of the country. That's a basic problem the party has had since at least 2009. What's making things worse is that Trump's bull-in-a-china-shop crudity and refusal to use the normal dog-whistle code is going to tar the whole party with the same brush. The fact that it took other candidates days to condemn his statements about Mexico (if they condemned them at all), for example, has surely not gone unnoticed by Latino voters. Each new vulgarity he comes out with will pose the same dilemma for other Republican candidates -- repudiate it and antagonize the baggot base, or let it slide and arouse the suspicions of the mainstream.

  6. Your link to the Greek crisis should be a must read for all Americans who are afraid it might happen here. Even with instant data retrieval and unlimited access to information, today's financial writers tend to be too lazy or intimidated by the masters of the universe to tell it like it is.

  7. Congratulations on the 3,000th post!

  8. Thomas: I hope it will also help some people see through the media dominance of northern talking points about the crisis (as I like to put it, Europe is different from the US in that, in Europe, the south is the good guys).

    Blurber: Thanks!

  9. Wow! 3000 is a lot of posts. But you're better known for quality. You are one of the first places I go to, and recommend, for insight. Congratulations on the milestone.

  10. Burr: Thanks! Fair & Unbalanced is one I read regularly, even if I don't comment often.
