The biggest difference between Britain's Conservative party and US Republicans is that the former isn't dominated by religious fundamentalism, as is shown by its rapid evolution on gay marriage, despite pockets of ongoing homophobia. Though politicians shy from discussing it, a major issue is the possibility of Britain leaving the European Union, which will not go away regardless of which party wins.
Posting may be light for a while. I have a severe pain in the left wrist, which makes typing a one-handed and rather laborious process.

Conservatives in my country are also not dominated or even barely populated by religious fundamentalists. This creates a difference in my views not always fitting in with the posts here, but I'm getting better at converting the national differences and on other subjects, often meet others here quite evenly.

Woody: Culturally the US is the odd-one-out in the Western world in that fundamentalist religion is still such a big presence here. Inevitably our party system has reconfigured itself to reflect the main divide in society -- we now have essentially a theocratic party vs. a secular party, quite different from how politics works in Britain or Australia.
