Link round-up for 6 December 2025

Various interesting stuff I ran across on the net over the last week.

For those among our fellow class warriors who observe Christmas -- a festive gingerbread guillotine!

Different people deal with snow in different ways.

Some cats are very smart.  These are not those cats.

Yep..... it's Christmas season.

See their faces.

Bark softly and carry a big stick.

Ads in the old days were pretty weird.

Here's a look at Christmas shopping from 1973.

Lady M is ready to celebrate Creepmas.

See a stop-motion animator work on a dramatic scene.

Imagine living in this house designed by "AI".

This pirate won't just rob you, he'll be an insufferable asshole about it.

Here's what happens when you make an "AI" video.

When arranging hospice care, make sure that you know how critical medications will be handled -- this is scandalous incompetence.

Windows 11 really isn't fixable.

Here's an amazing new "AI" program that randomly deletes everything on your computer.

Teenagers' ownership of smartphones correlates with several health problems.

Investing in Trump has turned out to be a bad idea.

Imagine having this creep living in your home with you.

The latest flaming-nutball idea from the "AI" crazies is data centers in space.

The great monologue from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice isn't what you think.

Here are some tips on telling real videos from fake ones.

There's one clue that always distinguishes real writing from fake.

Modern times require a new kind of hero.

Amazon used "AI" to dub anime shows on its video service.  The results were so crappy, and the fans were so furious, that Amazon withdrew the dubs.

Starting next February, you will be able to fly without a Real ID just by paying forty-five dollars.  That should certainly stymie the terrorists.

"It takes an average of 5 to 10 years for the regret and catastrophic results to set in....."

Did you think they couldn't make ChatGPT any shittier?  They managed.

A new film tells the story of a segregated black female Army unit which fixed the scandalously backlogged military postal system during World War II.

Evangelical pastors are leading an attack on empathy as a "spiritually dangerous" feeling that "will align you with hell".

Retail sales on Black Friday were actually up this year, in spite of the deteriorating economy.

Remember the collaterally damaged.

The CDC under RFK Jr has gone full quack.

He violently assaulted two people and got off with probation.  Justice in this country is an absolute joke.

A small Mideastern country exerts a secretive and malignant influence over the US government.

Religion spreads disease.

"AI" has failed, decisively and finally, and people are finally realizing it.  The number of people using "AI" in the workplace is now decreasing, not rising.

What did John Adams actually say about Jewish people?

Americans all across the US are coming together across party lines to oppose data centers.

Millions of Americans will likely see huge increases in health insurance premiums as their ACA tax credits end, due to Congress fiddle-faddling around and focusing on assigning blame rather than on solving the problem.

A "delete Facebook" campaign is under way as Meta threatens to use its users' data to train "AI".

7-11 fired this cashier for defending herself against a violent maniac.  These companies don't give a damn about the safety of their working-class employees.

Sometimes a slimy politician is just flat-out openly slimy.

British pension funds are getting out of US stocks in anticipation of the market crash when the "AI" bubble collapses.

Tesla sales are continuing to decline in Europe.

They vandalized a memorial to a murdered child.

Europe is reportedly now considering a mass dumping of US Treasury bonds as retaliation if Trump backstabs Ukraine -- a move which would devastate the US economy.

See the spectacular failure of a Russian ICBM test launch.  Here's some background on it.

Watch a Ukrainian sea drone attack on two of Russia's "shadow fleet" tankers.  Both tankers were disabled.  Another "shadow" tanker was damaged and is sinking of the coast of Senegal.  It's uncertain whether this was a Ukrainian attack, but the tanker's owner is ending all Russia-linked operations just to be on the safe side.

Sometimes it's drone-on-drone warfare.

Russian officers threw away this soldier's life for pointless symbolism.

See Ukrainian drones destroy a motorcycle assault group.  Part of the video is in infrared (heat-sensing) vision, illustrating its usefulness at night or in fog.

Here's a Russian oil refinery that was recently attacked.  And here's an oil pipeline.  This is a Russian drone control site in occupied Ukraine.

With anti-Semitism on the rise all over the West, Israel is preparing to absorb possible waves of refugees.

India is the world's main supplier of pharmaceuticals, but it needs to adapt to changing demand.

India's religio-nationalist Modi government is trying to install spyware on all the country's smartphones.

Good collection of links this morning!

- Loved the old advertisements!

- Our local news outlet also had a story about smartphones being detrimental to the overall health of adults who began using the phones from an early age. Another report out of the Netherlands was about how teens are experiencing issues with hearing loss from continually wearing earbuds and headphones early on.

- I took the "Can you spot the fake AI videos", and I managed to get 50%. (sigh).

- My husband wanted his "Meta" glasses. Spouting all the things he's going to use them for! And avid naturalist, he loves to look up interesting plants and trees, along with landmarks where ever we go. His Meta glasses... "You are looking at... a tree.". Went to the Beach Street Chinatown arch. "You are looking at... an arch." Yeah. I can see the target population they are aimed towards (the incredibly stupid and gullible). The glasses have been sitting the the case for the past 6 months.

I shudder to think what all this exposure to gadgetry is doing to young people. Countries that ban or strongly discourage this will have a strong advantage in the coming decades.

"AI" fakery is getting increasingly hard to spot. I didn't do well on that test either. At least the site provided some tips.

I guess Meta glasses only tell people things they already know. There can't be many people who can't recognize a tree when they see one.

I also found that piece about detecting fake videos helpful.

With regard to claiming that both political parties turned away from the ACA subsidies, I think that's unfair. The would-be dictator had a moment of willingness to go along with a deal, but the Republicans, who have wanted to kill Obamacare since its inception, nipped that in the bud.

I appreciate the link to "The Six Triple Eight." It's a little known part of history that I was glad to see on film.

It's disturbing how difficult it's becoming to spot fake videos. I hope when the "AI" bubble bursts it will take all these fakery-generating programs down with it.

The 6888 story was interesting and something I hadn't heard of before.

I don't think anyone said that "both political parties turned away from the ACA subsidies". I said that "Congress [is] fiddle-faddling around and focusing on assigning blame rather than on solving the problem", which is accurate. Each party seems to be mostly interested in trying to get the public to blame the other party for the problem, while there has been little or no serious effort to solve it instead. The AP article I linked to said that "lawmakers in both parties have spent most of the time since talking amongst themselves instead, while rehashing longstanding partisan arguments over the law in public". Again, this seems an accurate description of what's actually going on.
