Video of the day -- science fiction as art
No explosions, no quasi-supernatural nonsense, no superheroes with silly powers -- just the perhaps paradoxical combination of realism and beauty. I doubt this could even be made today, at least not in the same way. Well worth fullscreen.

You could call 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY the first science fiction "art film". That docking sequence is almost like a ballet, and the film is filled with amazing space sequences like that.
Sadly, Douglas Trumbull, who was the guiding hand behind many of 2001's visual effects, passed away a couple of years ago after a long and distinguished career.
I would say that the closest a modern film has come to this would be Nolan's INTERSTELLAR, but that is just my personal opinion.
One of the most magnificent film achievements of our lifetime. Kubrick was a creative genius and took us to a future world like nothing anyone had ever seen. I was 15 years old and loved the film so much I went back and took friends and saw it in first run at least 10 times. It is one of the reasons I went to NYU film school and had a career in film and television. Thank you Stanley
That is such a good movie.
That was a fabulous movie. Thanks for the memories.
I remember 2001 startled people when it came out. It made its space settings look real, and magnificent. A lot of SF has gotten almost cartoony since then. I think its use of music also contributed a lot.

Please be on-topic and read the comments policy. Spam, trolls, and fight-pickers will be deleted. If you don't have a Blogspot account and aren't sure how to comment, please see here. Fair warning -- I reject all comments containing any of the following:
1. Support for transgenderism
2. Negativity about Brexit
3. Support for a military draft or compulsory national service
I am not obligated to provide a platform for views I find morally abhorrent. And obviously I'm going to delete anything which is just quoting what an "AI" said. I want to hear from you, not from the always-wrong hallucination machine.
No comments advocating violence against any specific identifiable individual, even jokingly.
Please be considerate -- no political or politics-tinged comments on non-political posts, and no performative cynicism. Finally, please remember that this is a personal blog whose main purpose is to encourage contact from people with similar interests and world-views to mine. I really don't much care for arguing and debating; if arguing and debating is what you want, there are plenty of other places on the internet which welcome that.
From now until the finalization of the election results, no comments claiming the Republicans (or Democrats) will or can "steal" the election. It's pointless to engage with such stuff, and it promotes defeatism, which makes people less likely to vote or otherwise be politically active.
