Religiosity baffles me.
I had a discussion with my sister about her beliefs and it was like banging on a door that leads nowhere. No logic is possible. Only blind faith.
Their latest strategy of book banning is very authoritarian and scary.

XOXO

All of these are terrific! But, please, tell us how you really feel. :-)

Great lineup. I hope you don't mind but I stole ALL of these. They are that great. I won't be posting them soon this Sunday but when I do, if you would like me to, I'll note I got them from your blog.
Sixpence is so right. It's exactly that - "No logic is possible." It's like their brains have turned to mush after so much crap that they have been fed over the years. It is very rare for someone that has been heavily indoctrinated into religion, will finally see what happened to them. That happened to me. My grandmother wanted me to go to a fine Catholic school and become a nun like my great-aunt did but it never happened. I was confirmed and that was it. I woke up when a nun slapped me for asking too many "stupid and inappropriate" questions about why women are practically 3rd class citizens in the bible and in the Catholic faith. I've been fighting them ever since.

Nice collection. I haven't picked a favorite one yet. This could take a while.

Great collection, Infidel!

IMO:
Religion is an denial of some of an individual's larger societal responsibilities by the acceptance of the responsibilities assigned to like-minded followers of a cult you were either born into, or accepted.
But that's me...

Sixpence: Well, faith by definition is belief unsupported by evidence. If they allowed logic in, they couldn't avoid seeing that that's illogical.

Ricko: One of these days I will.....

Leanna: Please go ahead -- I didn't create any of these, just accumulated them from various sites. I'd appreciate a "found via" note. The "birds born in a cage" one is a quote from Alejandro Jodorowsky -- his name doesn't appear on it.

It does seem to be increasingly common that people who raised religious escape from it (see how fast the percentage of non-religious people is growing in many countries); the nature of modern society makes it almost impossible to avoid encountering conflicting ideas.

Mike: Well, there's about thirty of them. No need to play favorites.

Victor: That's certainly one aspect of it.

Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) was banished from his synagogue at the age of 23. He was cursed with all the curses in the Book of Deuteronomy and to be ripped apart by she-bears - not that you get many of them in Amsterdam -even then. The Christians didn't like him either. For my money, and Bertrand Russell's, he is one of the greatest moral philosophers of all time.

All of these make sense to the unshackled mind. I especially like the one where it explains why that I am not an atheist because I am mad at god. How can I be mad at something I don't believe in?

Infidel,
A lot depends on how one defines logic. If you take the basic fundamentals of logic as God, Allah, Whoever exists etc then things change... Personally I think it is a matter of morality rather than logic. There are issues with Gödelian completeness here. It is simply impossible to...

Gödel published his first incompleteness theorem in 1931 when he was 25 years old, one year after finishing his doctorate at the University of Vienna. The first incompleteness theorem states that for any ω-consistent recursive axiomatic system powerful enough to describe the arithmetic of the natural numbers (for example Peano arithmetic), there are true propositions about the natural numbers that can be neither proved nor disproved from the axioms.

Essentially any mathematics sophisticated enough to explain mathematics can't be proved within itself.

Now, that is a thought to ponder. Maths is the best Swiss Army Knife ever but you just can't take it apart with itself.

NickM: I've read the condemnation of Spinoza. Kind of funny how worked up they got.

Since there's no evidence supporting the existence of a god, assuming its existence is illogical. Calling something a premise rather than a conclusion doesn't make it immune from being illogical if it's contrary to the evidence.

Lady M: The Bible expounds here and there on supposed reasons why people might reject God. Some Christians have a lot of difficulty in accepting any reasons that don't conform to what the Bible says.

Granny: As do the readers, I gather.....more to come.....

OK, I would argue you can't logically disprove a God. There is very little evidence other than the truly desperate "God of the Gaps" argument but that really comes down to empirical reasoning rather than logic. Yes, I know I'm making what many would think of a petty technical distinction but these things matter - well, they do to me. Descartes' arguments demonstrate not so much the existence of God but the difficulty (impossibility) of proving His non-existence which is absolutely not the same thing. It is one of the fundamental reasons I consider myself a principled agnostic. I can't prove God is a phantom but then I find no empirical evidence for His existence so... I go with that.

Well, it was funny as in odd. It certainly wasn't funny Ha Ha! Not for Spinoza who was essesntially banished from his community and chucked out into the wider, largely Christian, community that was at best indifferent. What is scary is Spinoza's Netherlands was, at the time, about the most secular place on the planet.

There's no evidence at all. It's in the same category as a toddler's imaginary friend. You can't absolutely disprove that either, but no sane person wastes any mental energy on worrying that it might be real.

For fuck's sake, enough. I'm not interested in debating religion, only in ridiculing and insulting it. It's too stupid to waste logic or mental energy on.

Sorry if I annoyed! I was just trying to make a technical point. I'm that kinda guy. But I will ask a question... Infidel you do appreciate you are largely preaching against religion to the unconverted?

BTW, the just retiring Anglican Bishop of Liverpool has, in his leaving address, called for the acceptance of gay marriage. A large portion of "religion" in the UK has just given up on it.

I know, infidel, that you believe in fighting the battles that can be won and that change takes time. I agree on that score. But when one of the most senior bishops says that...

And that is one of the reasons I like technical debate - that and I'm a maths/logic geek - because to all intents and purposes the practical debate is finished.

Although I do think you might be interested in where "The God of the Gaps" comes from. I was somewhat surprised.

As long as religion exists at all, it needs to be attacked relentlessly. I've got my reasons.

Religion in this country is a lot more vigorous and vicious than in the UK. Same's true of most of the world.

Now ENOUGH. This is a blog, not a debating forum, and I'm not going to put up with bickering and arguing. I've lost track of how many dozen times I've said this.

I'm glad these eloquent people have expressed themselves so clearly and concisely. Their messages are hard to refute if one is willing to take the time to listen.

One that I particularly liked and haven't seen before is: The first thing you should know about me is that I am not you. A lot more will make sense after that.

This is so true and yet most of us fail to recognize it.

CAS: There are some very smart people here. Dawkins and Hirsi Ali especially can always be depended on to tell it like it is, where religion is concerned.

I think a lot of people are very self-absorbed. They don't grasp that other people can have different priorities, different likes and dislikes, and that that's OK. Trolls in particular sometimes seem shocked and outraged that somebody could be expressing a viewpoint different from theirs. I don't know how they cope with being on the internet at all.
