Video of the day -- fortify yourself against covid-19 (and more)
Bill Maher has often been willing to speak blunt truths that others avoid. Trumpanzees, generally a not-very-healthy population, won't like this -- and neither will many others. But as with masks and social distancing, the science is what it is. Looking at the comments on this video's YouTube page, I'm struck by the number of nurses praising Maher for speaking out on this.
I myself have lost almost twenty pounds since the beginning of this year, and am determined to get down to a healthy weight by the end of the year. Strict elimination of all animal products from the diet makes this easier than you'd think -- I've even stopped eating milk chocolate because it has milk in it. I'm almost 60 now. I can't afford to keep taking risks with my health -- nor indulge in comforting lies about what's healthy and what isn't.

This is good and so true. But it’s hard to do.
I’m 73 and fortunate to be thin and I have been so all my life. But I’ve always eaten whatever I want and luckily like the good stuff...veggies, salads, some fruits. But I also have a sweet tooth and a love of potatoes, cheese, and yes, some meats..mostly fish and chicken.
I would think another no no for this virus, is smoking, which I don’t do. It’s got to affect the lungs.
Americans are gluttonous not only in food, but their feeling that they are privileged and so self centered. It’s the whole big picture.
Wow - I love your testimonial about weight loss by eliminating animal products. I wish more people would realize how much better they could feel by going plant based.

Mary: It's terribly difficult, I know. You're fortunate if you mostly like healthy things. By the way, potatoes are very healthy. Humans evolved to be mostly fruit and starch eaters. The key is to get most of your calories from complex carbohydrates and reduce fats and protein, both of which most Americans get more of than is good for them.
Smoking is a huge risk factor. Doctors were originally mystified at why the virus death rate in China was so much higher for men than women -- well, in China, far more men smoke than women.
Lady M: I stopped eating meat a long time ago, but unfortunately not things like eggs and cheese (and junk food). Eliminating those things has made a difference.
Debra: Thanks! Yes, I used to like it, but I can't help it -- the thought of eating animal stuff just seems gross now.
That's awesome that you've lost some weight and are eating better.
I live with a vegetarian, so I benefit from her eating habits. I do like sweets, though. That's my downfall.
As for the Trumpanzees, their role model is a roly-poly boomer with no sense or direction, so that's that.

I just finished a year long pre-diabetes program at the YMCA. Lost about 30 lbs but have plateaued. It might be because the program is over. I probably need to sign up again. If there is another one.
Excellent piece; he's absolutely right, and it's not just the US - we Canadians are guilty too. Congratulations on your weight loss - I know how hard it is. I've been struggling just to stay in place the last six months, but just recently I realized how everything is harder to do now than it was one year ago, even at the same weight. It gave me a kick in the backside to get back to losing weight, not just be content to drift.
Sixpence: Sweets can be difficult. But you'll find minimizing refined sugar has a huge effect on how energetic you feel -- at least that's been my experience.
Stu: I think it's possible to benefit at any age.
Mike: The problem is that diet and exercise changes can be hard to sustain. Going back to the structured support of the program would probably help, if that's available.
Jenny_o: Excess weight is spreading around the world, partly due to increased prosperity and partly due to export of bad US eating habits. You're right about the extra effort it takes -- dragging an extra 20 pounds or whatever around takes energy. I hope you'll keep at it -- I'll have more posts about this in the near future, and may be able to spread some useful info.
