Bringing out the worst
Because covid-19 happens to have originated in China, a stupid and despicable minority of Americans have chosen to vent their fear and anger about the pandemic in the form of hostility toward people of visibly Asian descent. Incidents of verbal aggression and even violence against Asian-Americans have been rising sharply. Such thugs take encouragement, of course, from Trump's insistence on using such terms as "Chinese virus" or "Wuhan virus".
And these hateful names are embraced and amplified by his most fervent supporters -- the bigoted hard-core Christians. For weeks, they've been used and defended aggressively on LifeSite and Church Militant, though in the last couple of days they seem to have toned this down. Read Asian Evangelical pastor Eugene Cho's plea to his fellow Christians and Trump to stop calling covid-19 the "Chinese virus" -- then click the blue comments bar at the bottom to read the dismissive, contemptuous, and in some cases practically deranged responses from those fellow Christians.
If nothing else, one can hope that all this will convince Asian-American voters that right-wing ideology, the Trump cult, and the religion which buttresses both are no friends to them, but rather an absolute menace. More importantly, all Americans need to speak out against such efforts to exploit the pandemic to fuel racism.

Hatred of the other was not among the values that were part of the sort of Christianity into which I was raised; however, it is clear that this is not the case when it comes to some forms of fundamentalist Christianity. Trump has been exploiting this effectively, and it is dangerous. It looks like the U.S. has learned little from our own history, and people are still suffering as a result.
Do we expect anything better from the Christian right? They are a despicable movement founded upon racism.
At this point, shouldn't it be called the American virus? More than 100,000 cases and rising.
Agreed!
The question to ask defenders of this naming convention is "Why is it necessary? What is it accomplishing?"
Because there is no other competing coronavirus out there, any further labeling is 100% unnecessary and can be identified as a desperate attempt at branding/blaming/pointing-the-finger-the-other-way.
I think we in the U.S. should call it the Trump Virus since he's doing so little to help bring it under control.
Excellent points. And what you've noted about this crisis bringing out the worst as well as the best in people - yes. I think that hard times just amplify people's basic personalities. A scary thought.
I do believe that CoVid-19 has been renamed CoVid-45 in his honor and Trumplethinskin's ignorance never ceases to amaze me. I will be so glad when he's out of office. He really does make me weary. Just wake me up in January, okay?
Good for you for finding and going to these other sites to check on the 'other side'. I went to Lifesite and checked out the first story labeled 'Police officer tells pro-lifers they can’t pray outside Planned Parenthood because of COVID-19'. It had a video they labeled 'Police Hassle Pro-Lifers at Planned Parenthood'.
Both of those titles are more than not true. If anything, the cop should have been given a medal for doing a great job of handling the situation and helping the anti-choicers.

Jack: Fundamentalism these days seems to consist of little other than hatred of the other.
Lady M: Well, they're not only racist. They hate gays and atheists too.
Unknown: People may start calling it that.
Debra: Thanks!
Bluzdude: Exactly. Even if they think the name is justified, they should recognize that it's doing harm.
Nan: Good point.
Jenny_o: "hard times just amplify people's basic personalities" -- it certainly seems to be making Trump even more of an asshole.
Mildred: 2020 has already gone on more than long enough. We should just skip the rest of it.
Mike: I've been regularly reading "enemy" sites for years to keep up with their thinking. They do tend to be full of lies and distortions.
A very loving bunch, aren't they? The whole thing just gives me a headache. This is a time for the world to unite.
