Quote for the day -- legitimately horrifying

"Americans are broken, brainwashed slaves of one of the shittiest hypercapitalist hell holes on Earth, but they think they have it better than everyone else because they're not taught about the rest of the world -- and if you explain some of the basic human dignities everyone else is afforded, well, they've been conditioned to scream 'socialism!' and shut down the conversation.  It's legitimately horrifying."

Tumblr blogger "The Learned Wobbly" (more context at the link) -- he's American, as far as I can tell.

Lotz of truth to it, and funny, in an odd way ... but, what the f*ck do I know, eh? But all shit aside, I have spent a good deal of time, explaining to folks locally (Texas), the "socialist" game card that is being ran down on us. I mean, many folks don't even understand, that they already love socialism, as far as our things like Social Security, Medicare, transportation, public amenities, etc ... and how long we loved it ... some just never took the time to understand it, or seen it as "socialism". Because, I have talked to people that didn't clearly understand socialism, who are far more school educated than I am, too ... it's just not all dummies thinking wrong about socialism. I mean ... total neoliberalism is almost at the peak, and they will do everything they can to make sure nothing gets in the way of it ... scaring the shit out of people is cheap and easy, according to their budget expenditures. Laterz ....

The irony is that the majority of Americans would probably be absolutely shocked by such a statement, even if they're vaguely aware that the younger generation lives with vastly reduced opportunities compared with the America of 30 or 40 years ago. The Republicans' transformation of the economy has been slow enough and stealthy enough that most people still don't really understand it.
