Moving in mysterious ways

It's become routine for fundies to assert that extreme weather events (and other natural disasters) are punishments or warnings from God.  This enables them to account for the increase in such events in recent decades while continuing to reject global warming -- God is sending more of them due to the increased normalization of sins like homosexuality and abortion.  (One might wonder why we weren't getting hammered with daily hurricanes back in the days of slavery and the Indian genocide, but reading the Bible shows that God doesn't consider such things sinful.)  Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson notoriously attributed even the 9/11 attack to "the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians".  With hurricane season approaching, we can expect plenty more of this soon.

It seems odd, though, that hurricanes mostly hit the southeastern US, which is the most religious part of the country and the least tolerant of gays and abortion.  Why doesn't God send hurricanes to places like Los Angeles and San Francisco?  It would be a more convincing message, since hurricanes don't naturally occur there.

Veteran arch-wingnut Mark Taylor has come up with an "explanation" which I suspect we'll be hearing a lot more of.  Speaking of a hurricane which is expected to strike Louisiana this weekend, he says:

"That's the first thing that comes to mind," he said, "because when Roe v. Wade comes down, where is [the issue] going to go?  It is going to go to the states.  And you have states out there like Georgia -- and there are a couple of others out there -- that have gone as far as making this stuff illegal for abortion.  You've got to remember, what is abortion?  The sacrificing of kids.  What does that sacrifice do?  Abortion is the food source for Baal; Baal being the strongman over America.  That's what empowers Baal.  You're taking Baal's food source and he's not liking it, so this is retaliation from the enemy that I would say is from that heartbeat bill."

I originally found this quote in this post at Mock Paper Scissors, where a couple of commenters were puzzled that Taylor apparently accepts Baal, a pagan deity, as actually existing and having power.  In fact, many fundies believe that all the deities of non-Christian religions do exist but are actually demons, playing the role of gods as part of their boss Satan's ongoing plan to seduce as many people as possible away from Jesus.  How the ancient Canaanite/Phoenician god Baal attained the position of "strongman over America" is not clear, but maybe he got promoted.  Anyway, apparently these recent anti-abortion laws in the South have been real Baal-busters, and he's riled up about it and about to start smiting the miscreants with hurricanes.

Taylor doesn't explain why God doesn't prevent this.  Perhaps he's too busy appearing on pieces of toast.  But if the hurricane fails to form or does less damage than expected, Taylor will doubtless claim that divine mercy thwarted Baal's efforts.  Until the next hurricane, and the next, and the next.

The fundie mind is a never ending source of amusement, befuddlement and horror to me. How can people be that gullible and malicious at the same time? It’s the XXI century, for fuck’s sake. Religulous people know it all yet know nothing. So absolutely ignorant yet so knowledgeable of every demon, spirit and hellish denizen there is? Ready to explain anything and every contradiction in their little book of horrors? The cognitive dissonance that plague them makes them absolutely illogical and terribly dangerous.
Religion in a nutshell is madness.

These people are so stupid that there is simply no other word for it. Some sort of DNA gone bad or some recessive gene that has surfaced as part of de-evolution that, I believe, is occurring.

The stupidity and ignorance burn.....

God sends earthquakes to San Francisco because of The Gays; LA gets the fires and mudslides.

And helping my mom find a parking spot or her other earring.
Maybe helping that spoiled little Mormon girl find the keys to her car.

I think originally he must have been omnipotent, but now he just has too many people and sins to keep track of. So lots of things are falling through the cracks.

And now I have to add Baal to my list of scary?
Where does it END?!?!?!

Sixpence: They do need to be challenged more. Ask Taylor, for example, how do you know that Baal is the "strongman over America"? How do you know which entity is causing various disasters? On what evidence? Voices in your head?

Frankly, though, it's a relief when they're funny instead of terrifying.

Mary: Critical thinking is a learned behavior, not a natural thing, and not everybody learns it. Fundamentalism pushes people in the opposite direction, toward serenely-confident idiocy. It works the same in every religion.

Bob: Funny how God can only punish each region by means of disasters that naturally occur there anyway.

Ami: It is indeed strange that God didn't do anything about the Holocaust, but intervenes to help people find a good parking space or win a football game. His priorities are very odd.

It will never really end, just decrease over time as religion withers away. Religious crackpottery may never totally disappear, but eventually only a negligible number of people will be paying any attention to it.

Usually these folks absorbed in their religion, won't look at anything with a clear head, because they are too far gone, or let's just say "caught in the moment" {:-) I've noticed that they will turn anything good or bad in their personal live even, into some kind of divine intervention, if they become that intoxicated. If they have a great day it's a blessing, if their house gets wiped out by a hurricane, it's a godly force giving them some kind of lesson, or wake up, or challenge of their faith, for their own good ... seen one, seen em all. No ... what they'll long and wait for, is an earthquake, tsunami, forest fire, or whatever the west coast gets hit with because of their location to happen ... when the Santa Rosa fires happened for example (even though much intensity can be credited to global warming), they will blame it on the gay men in the Castro District in San Francisco. Example, when the floods happened in Texas a few years back, it was blamed of course, on the gay dudes in Houston's Montrose District (aka Sodom and Gomorrah to Texas evangelicals) ... it's the same ole song and dance, and those tunes and jigs come a dime a dozen. Little link below for a cheap laugh on it {:-)

It's worse than you describe it. Hurricanes originate off of the west coast of Africa, travel across the Atlantic Ocean and end up in the South of the US. Can you remember what else originated on the west coast of Africa and ended up in the South?

Debra: :-)

Ranch: Yep, God didn't do anything about Auschwitz, but he's already to start smiting because gays are allowed to exist.

Green: Well, that suggests a better supernatural explanation -- hurricanes are swarms of angry ghosts from the slave-trading days.....

I've often thought that the fundies are severely lacking in their ability to reason. Faith and Fear seem to be what guides their perception(s) of reality.

If fundies had good reasoning ability, they wouldn't be fundies.
