About Me
- Name: Infidel753
- Location: Portland, Oregon, United States
Individualist, pro-technology, pro-democracy, anti-religion. I speak only for myself and not for any ideology, movement, or party. It has been my great good fortune to live my whole life free of "spirituality" of any kind. I believe that evidence and reason are the keys to understanding reality; that technology rather than ideology or politics has been the great liberator of humanity; and that in the long run, human intelligence is the most powerful force in the universe.

Trumpeters probably think the Mars probe is all Fake News too.
Great point. It is stunning how the people with the least knowledge of a subject think they personally know more than others who have advanced degrees in the subject and work in that field. Hugs
Debra: I've already heard of a few cases of that.
Scottie: Scientists have one hell of an impressive track record, something the doofuses who challenge them don't seem to grasp.
Well, I'd heard people giving Trump credit for the Mars probe. Obviously people with no understanding of the lead times for this sort of thing...
As far as the OP quote... It is alas a false comparison in many ways. The two are very different kinds of problems. Climate deals with deep complexity rather than deep space and the two are very different things to understand and work with.
I agree with Debra. This will be fake news to people like that. I personally know people who deny climate change and no amount of evidence will change it. They believe WE'RE ignorant. They start off with "In my opinion..." As if someone's opinion has more credibility about climate change than scientific data. One day I'm going to eye roll myself into another dimension.
Nikc: The point is, science is pretty much the only system we have for discovering reality that actually works, and it has a hell of a long track record of practical successes. The predictions of the climate-change model (melting ice, increasing extreme-weather events, etc.) have been borne out so far except that they're generally getting worse faster than the models predicted. Yes, different fields of science differ in how they work, due to the nature of what they study, but the consensus of scientists in any field is far more likely to be right than a bunch of religious ignoramuses and libertarian ideologists who simply can't stomach recognizing a problem which is likely to be solvable only by major government action.
Martha: The prevalence of global-warming denialism in the US population is decreasing over time, probably because the country keeps getting hammered with extreme weather with a frequency that just didn't happen a few decades ago. There will always be a hard core of unreachables, though, just as with creationism and suchlike. I get the impression there's very little denialism in the developed world outside the Anglosphere, though, probably because those countries don't really have ideological libertarianism.
Hah! Spot on.
