Always loved Dawkins, and I have no problem with his "militant" atheism. Of course it isn't "militant" at all, but people who can't stand to hear his truths label it as such.
I've never heard believers label loud-mouthed preachers such as the late Falwell or Robertson or Graham as "militant" religionists, yet on a daily basis they drown out the voices of reason.
They can argue the tu quoque about science: science invented the A-bomb, eugenics, Agent Orange, etc. So I think the message that children shouldn't be brainwashed is a better message than that religion can kill. Children should be educated so that they can have the imagination to come up with the next best thing and the critical faculty to know whether the person claiming the next best thing is onto something or just deluded.
Shaw: And there's nothing wrong with being "militant" against lies, defamation, and abuse of power.
Kay: He's one of our best minds, in my opinion.
Lady A: Of course, science has no ideological predisposition to kill -- it provides knowledge about reality, which can then be used for good or evil. Religion kills using whatever tools are available, from burning at the stake to flying planes into buildings.
Individualist, pro-technology, pro-democracy, anti-religion. I speak only for myself and not for any ideology, movement, or party. It has been my great good fortune to live my whole life free of "spirituality" of any kind. I believe that evidence and reason are the keys to understanding reality; that technology rather than ideology or politics has been the great liberator of humanity; and that in the long run, human intelligence is the most powerful force in the universe.

Fascinating! Dawkins always gives me pause to think.

I can never understand why Dawkins is considered to be so "militant" or "strident." He seems like the most reasonable guy in the world to me.
As Truman used to say, "I don't give 'em hell, I tell 'em the truth and they think it's hell." Religion is just used to being immune from criticism.
