Wow.......... That was scary, and probably extremely accurate.
RC & Shreddakj: What Frank Schaeffer says deserves serious attention -- because of his background, he understands these people better than most.
Nonnie: But I would say that that article is wrong on several levels. For one thing, the right wing is not winning every battle -- look at the success of the gay-marriage movement and the enactment of (an imperfect beginning toward) health-care reform), for example. More to the point, it ignores the issue of religion dominating politics, which is the central fact about the American right wing of today.
I actually see the rise of the religious right here in the US as a last gasp of fundamentalist religion.
Look at the Northeast and the Northwest areas of this country. Those areas are the least religious in the US--also the most liberal and doing better than average economically.
And I'm betting young people in the Bible Belt--because of the influence of social networking and the internet, will be less likely to stick with their parents' religion as they mature. I think it is human nature to move away from fundamentalist religious doctrine as one becomes more educated and more worldly.
The areas of the world where there is the strongest fundamentalist religious influence are areas where education and standard of living are the poorest [ certainly true in this country].
Atheism/nonbelief is gaining in this country, not diminishing.
SK: Fundamentalism is certainly on the decline in terms of numbers, and younger peole are leaving religion in droves, as your link suggests (in part, driven away by the inflexibility and bigotry of the hard-line churches). Unfortunately, as often happens in such cases, this means that the remnant consists of the most fanatical -- and their agitation as they see their power (and numbers) slipping is part of what fuels the militancy and increasing willingness to contemplate using force to do what they no longer have much hope of doing via the ballot box.
