How tyranny falls
As I observed on Sunday, the Iranian uprising is changing in character. After months in which the theocracy has responded with beatings, torture, rape, and murder to every expression of popular discontent, mass anger is boiling over; the people are returning violence for violence. In this video, filmed during the Ashura demonstrations on Sunday, a vast crowd turns on a unit of police and overwhelms them. It is not pretty. But remember what the Iranian people have suffered at the hands of this regime and its enforcers, not just since this year's stolen election, but since the mullahs seized power in 1979.
The theocracy has a special jet plane on standby to fly Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his family out of Iran if the situation "spirals out of control". On Sunday the regime ordered that this plane be given a full check-up to ensure its performance if needed.
The bearded thugs who have been grinding the Iranian people into the mud for thirty years can watch YouTube as well as anyone else can. I think it's dawning on them that the end of their rule is near.

Let's hope so. What hell these people have been through. I hope we appreciate how lucky we are.
The Iranian protesters are very persistent and they are resorting ever more subtle ways of getting their point across. Not buying products that are advertised on State sponsored TV, writing anti-regime slogans on paper money and bills, graffiti outside the homes of members of the militia who have been breaking up demonstrations. They can't lose.

I did think it was kind of funny that Khamenei's special jet is standing by to fly him to Russia. Not the sort of place a devout Muslim would want to end up, surely, what with all the vodka and mini-skirts. I guess there just aren't many countries that want a washed-up has-been bloody old theocrat any more.
Maybe he figures that if he's going down he may as well enjoy the ride.

A Pew Forum on Religion and Life poll finds that American Muslims are unusual in the degree to which they are integrated into mainstream American society and demonstrate moderate attitudes, condemning religious extremism and violence. They differ siegnificantly [sic] from the profile of Muslims in the UK and Germany, e.g, in these regards. (Muslims in the US are generally from higher class origins and are better educated and wealthier than is typically the case with European Muslims).

It would be interesting to compare the degree of social integration of American Muslims and Christian fundamentalists. The de facto results in either case aren't particularly reassuring.
At least Blackwater isn't allowed to rape people with impunity on American soil. Though that was probably on the Republicans' to-do list.

Although unaware of any formal studies, I offer some personal impressions. I lived in London during the 1980s where I had some Arab friends, including this man who may be known to you. Aburish did not venture out in public often, not because he was reclusive by choice, but because he feared untoward violence against his person on account of his writings. We would meet in his London flat only by invitation (and I was always asked to be punctual).
During the 1990s, I lived in Paris and had a chance to see the socialized high-rise communities of Banlieue (the suburbs surrounding Paris beyond the Peripherique), which were predominantly Muslim. These neighborhoods were poor, depressed and depressing, crime-ridden, and high in unemployment. There were small Muslim neighborhoods inside the City of Paris, not as insular and socially resentful as the Banlieue communities. During the terrorist bombings of 1995-96, French resentment against North Africans ran high but was aimed mostly at Algerians.
Overall, I saw more assimilation of Muslim peoples in the UK than in France … at least in the 1980s (I can’t speak for today).
With respect to Christian fundamentalists, what drives them is homophobia and their desire to insulate themselves from what they perceive is a permissive society. Accordingly, they home school their children.

Most Muslims where I live are shopkeepers and small business owners. What motivates them seems to motivate most people ... a desire to earn a decent living, live in peace, and raise their families.
