The Sandra Bernhard "gang-rape Palin" thing

Every time I think the Palin-trashing can't sink any lower -- it does.

I'm not going to describe what was said. You can read about it here. Apparently the public airing of violent sexual fantasies that the average drunken frat boy would be careful to keep private, is now "highly provocative" humor. At least this journalist noted the possibility that a reference to "big black brothers" as presumptive rapists might just conceivably be looked upon as a bit racist in certain circles.

I've been only vaguely aware of Bernhard and her form of "humor"; the link above does have a short video of her act, though it doesn't include the gang-rape "joke" (if that's the right term). To me, this performance is a step beyond being merely not funny -- I would literally never have guessed that it was intended to be funny, had it not been described as such in the text article accompanying the video. She sounds like she is simply spluttering incoherently with rage -- which I suspect is not far from the truth.

Is this what the left has come to? Is this how we want to present ourselves to the world?

It's not really funny....it's a "genre".

I can see a liberal Jewish audience liking it....they have a love/hate thing with the Evangelicals.

(Good support of Israel, constant annoying frigging proselytizing.....you can relate, as an atheist, right?)

Bernhard is a comedian/artist and let's leave that way. There will be always democrat artists bashing the republicans and vice-versa. Didn't this exist since a long time ?

Christy -- Yes, publicly fantasizing about people you don't like getting gang-raped is a mainstay of traditional Jewish discourse. Not.

Prash -- We've always had political humor, but it's very rarely gotten as gross and disgusting as this. This woman is simply choking on her own hatred and rage.

Comedian? Comedians are supposed to be funny. And if she's an artist, then the neighbors' dog left a work of art on the lawn yesterday and they forgot to scoop it up.

If a Republican comedian had suggested that Hillary Clinton be gang-raped, there would be a lot of outrage on the Left. The fact that so-called Progressives don't see the double standard is very telling.
For more examples of this type of revolting treatment of Sarah Palin, check out

Some of the links there are NSFW, which gives you some idea of how bad some of them are.

Thanks for the link.

If a Republican comedian had suggested that Hillary Clinton be gang-raped

I actually find it a bit difficult to imagine a Republican comedian doing that. The thought of one of the more out-there Obama crazies saying such a thing, on the other hand, is all too plausible.

I can't believe there are people trying to defend Bernhard. Perhaps Joseph Cannon needs to add another panel at the end of this.

The black gang-raping....which I didn't really listen to--I was focused on the "leave my old testament alone, bitch" stuff--was just a liberal (maybe Jewish, but not exclusively Jewish) way to saying she's a small-town, uber-Christian, uptight bigot.

A stereotype.

It is just crude comedy. I doubt Obama would endorse it. He got mad at Bernie Mac and the shame killed the poor guy.

(Just kidding.....)

Republican comedian....isn't that an oxymoron?

I think, in all seriousness, that there is just a huge liberal contingent in show biz and it makes it look like everyone is an outrageous Obama crazy.

Fact is, most Obama supporters have the same values as McCain supporters.

People in show business are paid to be outrageous, that's all.

It's a misrepresentation of how most Obama supporters feel, and we certainly can't blame the candidate or his REAL supporters for a few loud, public voices that don't have endorsement.

It would help if I saw more Obama supporters condemning this kind of thing or at least acknowledging how outrageous it is. So far all I hear from that crowd is attempts to minimize it and make excuses for it, just like with all the other disgusting stuff directed against Clinton and Palin that I've been pointing out.

You mean on their blogs condemning it?

I don't think Obama should have to take his valuable time defending people he probably doesn't know or like.

Who is supposed to be responsible?

Except the comedian, entertainer, blogwriter, photographer, themselves?

I betcha.....if I looked in some dark bad places, I might find some racist, Republican blogs that need some apologizing. They just aren't mainstream.

I wouldn't expect you to apologize for them, nor would I expect McCain to waste valuable time when he needs to campaign.

Gang rape isn't funny, of course!

OK. I'm condemning it.

Considering the tidal wave of insults and filth pouring from the pro-Obama blogosphere for months against Clinton and her supporters and now against Palin and us PUMAs, it's clear that there is a unique problem with Obama supporters that they'd be wise to do something about.

Frankly I'd be happy with even a cessation of attempts to minimize it and make excuses for it.

Obama himself did, in fact, make a statement a while back urging his supporters to at least back off from Palin's daughter, and I gave him credit for it at the time. But it would be in his interest to make a more serious and high-profile effort to rein in the ugliness oozing from people who claim to support him. Surely he must realize -- or does he? -- that it has deepened the split in the party and revolted people whose votes he needs and might otherwise have been able to get.

I think.....McCain choosing Palin might have been the smartest thing ever.

He knew it would draw fire and divert attention.

I take back all I said about him not being as smart as Obama!

But I think most of what is happening is just bloggy, cyber-nothingness that we are all promoting.

I would never have heard of the Bernhart thing except by you. I still haven't seen it elsewhere.

But you certainly have a right to be offended!

I just think the real issues are more important than the ignorance of some of Obama's supporters.

Btw.....the recent ads on McCain supporting companies in China with unfair trade practices.....

I think maybe McCain actually agrees with me on wanting a real global economy and not having restrictive trade measures.

I mean, heck, if they can do it better? They should do it. Why would a great country need to rein up and coming economies in?

Must ponder..

A point which occurred to me, and others, when McCain made his choice -- see the last four paragraphs of this. I doubt McCain knew quite how bad the abuse would be, but I think he knew that the Obama cult would attack Palin in ways which would deepen the split in the Demoractic party.
