Developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War for high-speed military sea transportation, the
ekranoplan was a sort of giant hovercraft with some of the characteristics of an airplane. The technology never went any further and is now almost forgotten, but the designs are intriguing, and a smaller version may yet be revived in modern Russia.
