Individualist, pro-technology, pro-democracy, anti-religion. I speak only for myself and not for any ideology, movement, or party. It has been my great good fortune to live my whole life free of "spirituality" of any kind. I believe that evidence and reason are the keys to understanding reality; that technology rather than ideology or politics has been the great liberator of humanity; and that in the long run, human intelligence is the most powerful force in the universe.

Thanks for the link, my friend.
This is probably a stupid question, but is that legal? Can they truly be fired for no reason and made to take a pay cut if they come back?! Employees have many protections here that are lacking in other places, yet this is allowed to happen? I'm very concerned for the people on the losing end of that proposition, and... stunned.
I can't think of any reason why it would be illegal. Anti-discrimination law prohibits firing people on the basis of race, religion, gender, or (in a few parts of the country) sexual orientation, but aside from that, businesses can make hiring-and-firing decisions pretty much any way they want. Some union contracts establish further rules, but my guess is that these people didn't have a union.
