Iran -- one month in

It is now a little over a month into the Iran war.  While it would be unreasonable to expect really dramatic results in so short a time, it's remarkable what has been accomplished already.  Many top figures within the theocracy have been killed, and much of its infrastructure of repression -- facilities and personnel of the Basij militia and of the Revolutionary Guards -- has been destroyed.  Missile attacks on Israel have greatly declined compared to their earlier volume, suggesting that much or most of Iran's missile inventory and/or launch apparatus has been destroyed.  US non-stealth bombers are operating freely over Iran, showing that its air defenses have been so degraded as to no longer pose a threat.  Two days ago Netanyahu said that the war is probably past its halfway point.

There are signs of divisions emerging within the regime.  The president and the head of the Revolutionary Guards are in open disagreement about how to pursue the war.  In theory both are subordinate to the supreme leader, Mojtabā Khāmenei, but he has not made any appearances since his appointment and there is no evidence that he is even still alive.  The Iran International news site claims that the Revolutionary Guards have seized de facto power.  There are also apparently disputes over the legitimacy of Khāmenei inheriting power from his father.

The war, and the regime's shutting down of the internet across the country, are putting such strain on Iran's already-impoverished economy that economic distress could trigger renewed street protests -- most of the major uprisings during the last couple of decades in Iran started as economic protests which then rapidly turned political.  Dollar-based pricing is spreading as the regime's currency becomes worthless.  Due to shortages of enforcers, the regime has begun recruiting children as soldiers and importing foreign Shiite armed gangs to help beat down the Iranian people if needed.  These are not the actions of a government with any confidence in its own stability.

Here is a discussion of Israel's four-stage strategy for bringing down the theocracy.  And the Israeli-US campaign is succeeding, despite the dominant narrative in the US media.

Speaking of which, there is an important point to keep in mind.  This Twitter account posted a video purporting to show Tel Aviv blacked out and under heavy missile attack, but the video was actually of Tehran.  There has been a widely-repeated report that Israeli soldiers in Gaza had tortured a child, but the story bore no resemblance to what had actually happened.  Recently there have been claims that the Knesset had enacted the death penalty for "political prisoners" (here is an example), but in reality this law mandates the penalty for persons convicted of terrorist attacks that result in death, and such persons are murderers by definition, not political prisoners.  Over the years I have seen so many cases like photographs claiming to be of death or destruction in Gaza, which later turned out to actually be from other Middle Eastern countries years earlier and situations unrelated to Gaza or Israel, that I now simply assume any claim of implausible Israeli actions or defeats is false unless it's backed by absolutely solid evidence.

My point is, Israel's enemies are proven liars.  They lie and lie and lie.  And they are a big component of the opposition to the current military campaign in Iran.  You cannot trust anything that these people say.  Any video or photograph they post is more likely than not something other than what they claim it is.  Any statement they make is likely to be a lie.  Fact-check everything.

There is a more substantive concern.  Throughout the decades-long history of the jihadist wars against Israel, there is a recurring pattern of the West pressuring Israel to accept a ceasefire before the enemy is completely defeated.  Wars end when one side wins them, but because Israel has not been allowed to fully win, the conflict does not end -- and so it has dragged on and on.  There is, perhaps, some risk of the same thing happening here.  Trump's befuddled and conflicting public statements about the war, his repeated claims to be working on a deal with the theocracy which would leave it in power, and recently his ludicrous assertion that "regime change" has already been accomplished, suggest that his obvious dementia is damaging his ability to stay focused.  The Arab states of the Gulf are already seriously concerned, and are pressing Trump to stay the course.

If the campaign is abandoned before the theocracy falls, it will be a disaster and a monstrous betrayal.  All those who have died will have died for nothing, and the best chance in our lifetime for the Iranian people to take control of their own destiny will have been thrown away.  The theocracy will eventually rebuild the military capabilities that have been destroyed, and will continue to foment terrorism and murder.  But whatever Trump does, I suspect that Israel, this time, will not allow itself to be pressured into such a disaster.  Because for them this isn't just another battle like all the earlier wars -- it is, so to speak, the entire ball game.  A democratic or even just secular Iranian government, aligned with Israel and the West and no longer supporting murderous gangs like Hamas and Hezbollah and the Houthis, would reduce the whole jihadist threat against Israel from an existential menace to a nuisance.  It would make the Middle East more peaceful, and Israel's situation more secure and relaxed, than at any time during the last eighty years.  The Israeli voting public, which overwhelmingly supports the current military campaign, would never forgive Netanyahu if he let that opportunity be lost.

I know we fell out over AI art. I'm not going there again here. But... I do know quite a bit about how it works. Some images from the Iranian government are clearly risibly bad AI. Does this matter more than concerns over how AI is changing art? Yes, if people believe it. And there are people who just wanna believe*. And that is why the kinda fact checking people like you do matters. Tehran=Tel Aviv? Tel Aviv is on the coast!

At a technical level the IDF and US forces have performed as well as anyone would expect - with bravery and competence. I expected nothing less. At the political level though... Trump is all over the place. In war there is no substitute for clarity of purpose**. I have seen none from the White House. This is a concern. Because without a clear conception of victory there can be no victory, no VI-Day. And it is wrong to spend blood and treasure with no clearly expressed goal. It is stupid geopolitically and it is a betrayal of the courage of one's soldiers.

I also worry that an external attack on the regime risks getting ordinary Iranians to rally to the regime as they did in 1980 when Iraq attacked.

Don't get me wrong... If this results in a broadly secular Iran (kinda like Türkiye) then that is brilliant! But... I don't worry about the USAF knowing how to drop a JDAM but I do worry whether the Orange Cock Womble even knows even why he is doing this.

But all the best to the USA and Israel! Because despite the US Commander in Chief not knowing where Joe Biden kept his socks this just might work. And if it does... Wowsers!

Let's hope.

*A couple of years ago the Flat Earth Society boasted on it's website (yeah, I know) that it had "Followers around the globe". Epic Fail.
**I have a feeling Trump has never played Civ. I have. Civ shaped me profoundly because it is a great game but also because it directly got me reading authors like Sun Tzu.

...I just wish we had a proper agenda for inciting war with Iran.

Anvil: Glad to be informative.

NickM: Governments have always used faked images for propaganda, but "AI" is certainly making it easier. Unfortunately some people are so eager to believe the worst of Israel that they'll take anything that serves that agenda at face value.

Trump can't keep track of what he's doing or planning. That's typical of a person with dementia, We need to stop putting such old people in high positions. But the military knows what they're doing, and so does Netanyahu.

Kelly: So hope we all. Any such operation involves risks, but at least now there's hope.

Your posting is spot on, Israel must win its part of the War. If Iran is to be dealt with, it must be dealt with completely, not half way

My point was that at least Dubya ginned up some BS and SOLD it to congress and the country. The idiot we have now can't put two sentences together without contradicting himself, and has sycophants under him who don't have a clue what the constitutional lines they keep breaking are in order to support him.

Rade: For fuck's sake, the reasons for the war are perfectly clear. That's what every post I've written about it has covered. Trump isn't clear, but that's hardly relevant.

I haven't really been keeping up with everything that's been going on with Iran lately because of everything going on here at home. So I appreciate the update you poste.

Oh! I get that; but I beg to differ - Trump IS relevant in that he has his hands on the nuclear football, and he's losing his shit over the fact that all his corruption, greed, lies and scandals can no longer be hidden. He doesn't care about liberation or restoring democratic control; all WORTHY reasons. He want's the oil and natural resources. Period. What I am seeing is a bumbling buffoon with his cadre of lackey whispering "Caesar, Thou art immortal!" into his ear. And the escalations are going to continue strictly for the reason of subterfuge. It was Venezuela, now Iran, next Cuba.

Our only option is to remove him from office and; remove his PARTY from power, and begin sorting through the destruction from his wake. We can't even begin to contemplate where and what to rebuild right now.

I am just grateful that I don't have to watch any more of his "Big Beautiful Plans for Gaza!". He's got his stalled ballroom to moan about.

Mary: Thanks. I hope to be informative with these. I get most of my information from the Middle Eastern media, so it covers things that the US media don't.

Rade: I'm aware of all that, but that isn't what my Iran posts are about. There are lots of blogs and sites covering the US-domestic-politics side of this. I'm focusing purely on the situation in the Middle East itself. So stuff about US domestic politics is really off-topic. I only mention Trump at all to cover things that might have an immediate effect on what happens in Iran.

I saw something very odd on yesterday. I was in Newcastle, England and coming from Grey's Monument in the dead centre of town there was a right noise of banging drums and strange kinda techno music. It was a protest. It had flags and images. It is normally a place where the "despicable left" to protest and I assumed from a distance it was something like "Queers for Iran" but I walked up to it see and the Iranian flags were the old Imperial ones ones (with quite a few Isreali ones to boot!) The pictures were of the late Shah! I am originally from Newcastle and this amazed me. There was no counter demo. Quite warmed the cockles!
