Mentally-ill sexual perverts who live in a dream-world of incoherent and unclassifiable delusions have probably always existed, but today the internet is both making them more visible and deepening their pathologies by giving them legitimacy in their own eyes.  Inevitably some of them turn violent, and sometimes their targets have some connection with the political world.  That doesn't mean their actions are political in any meaningful sense, any more than the bites of a rabid raccoon are.  As Maher also expressed it here, "Look at this guy.  He was doing porn video games with furries.  He was on a game called Furry Shades of Gay 3.  This kid is in his basement with VR goggles on, getting virtually assfucked by a cartoon wombat, and you're going to put politics into this?  This kid doesn't belong in either party, he belongs in a straitjacket."  Sometimes it really is just that simple.
