Video of the day -- tariff time

Some of Peter Zeihan's analyses of issues get a bit too hyperbolic for my taste, but in this case he's just giving an unusually clear explanation of the plain facts.  Economically, the CUM countries (Canada-US-Mexico) are so tightly integrated that imposing harsh new tariffs between them would massively disrupt innumerable supply chains and cripple US manufacturing.  Combined with the decline in business and consumer spending due to uncertainty caused by all the random blundering in Washington, and reduction of government spending caused by DOGE, the tariffs would make a deep recession almost inevitable.

The stock market has been falling, which might yet make Trump delay or rescind most of the tariffs, as he has already done twice before.  But even the recurring threat to impose them is causing much uncertainty and economic damage.  And if he does stick with the tariffs, expect the nightmare of "stagflation" -- high inflation and a serious recession at the same time.

Trump is also expected to announce tariffs on other major economies.  Europe and East Asia are prepared to retaliate.  To anyone who knows about the generations-old hatreds in East Asia, the spectacle of Japan, China, and South Korea coming together on this issue (or any issue) is astonishing.  By picking fights with every other major economy at once, Trump is unifying most of the world against the US, in a pointless trade war he can't win.

I'm interested to read what you think about Trump's Liberation Day, Infidel. I haven’t found any reasonable arguments for Trump’s tariff obsession. I tell myself that he’s quite possibly suffering from dementia and as a result, is simply hell bent on edicting them into place, but I’d like to hear other theories that are plausible.

What’s even less understandable are the actions of Republicans in Congress. Speaker Johnson is just gonna stand back and watch this happen? Why? Are all these high-ranking officials ignorant? Jaded? Scared? Lacking a basic sense of civic duty? Morally bankrupt? Victims of herd mentality? Waiting for the rapture? The fact that none of them are willing to explain the principles that underly their support for name-that-wrecking-ball, leads me to believe the answer is a combination of the above.

I believe Trump is suffering from dementia, at least intermittently, and also has certain psychological peculiarities as a result of having been surrounded by yes-men and toadies all his life -- notably an attitude that he's always right and anyone who disagrees can and should simply be bullied into submission.

He's been told repeatedly that US tariffs on imports are a tax on Americans, but seems to just refuse to believe it because admitting he's wrong about something, even if he is, goes against the way he's been able to get away with behaving all his life.

As for the Republicans in Congress, most of them are acting out of fear -- fear that Trump (or Musk, now) will fund a primary challenger if they get out of line, and perhaps also fear of violence from militant Trumpists, although there's less and less grounds for the latter -- Trump has been in politics for ten years now and I don't think there's been a single case of a politician who stood up to him being assassinated. But most of them are abject cowards.

Even so, there are some signs of pushback from Congress on the tariffs. I guess even they can see this is potentially such a huge economic disaster that they have more to fear from irate voters if they don't do something to stop it.

Thanks for the explanation. Have you read Senator Chris Murphy's comment today?

I checked a couple of news sites, but didn't see any reference to a Chris Murphy saying something. Would you care to elaborate?
