Link round-up for 22 October 2023

Various interesting stuff I ran across on the net over the last week.

Don't chew on that.

I'm fairly sure this is cheating.

It worked perfectly..... oops.

Many would watch this drumming circle perform.

Take your pun-ishment.

It wouldn't be wise to let this dog get too hungry.

Apparently the world is full of incompetence.

Here's a cute coffin ghost house.

You're gonna need to make a detour.

See a short but touching vampire comic.

This is Palermo in Sicily.

See a few views of the Moon.

Some startling slow-motion liquid video here.

Good demonstration here of the gyroscopic effect -- this is why bicycles fall over when they're still but not when they're moving and the wheels are rotating.

Science did itOnly science could have done it.

Human language development has some parallels in chimpanzees.

"You really think someone would do that?  Just go in the internet and tell lies?"

Some online jpg manipulation tools here.

Even if it eventually succeeds, YouTube's anti-adblock campaign will be self-defeating.

Here's how to remove one of those "boot" things from your car (I don't know whether it works for all models).

People are getting tired of "influencers", with some venues banning their activities.

Islamists have a choice of targets.

The "AI" shittyization of movies is proceeding.

You'll never be a tiger.

An anti-Israel activist speaks out.

Don't be a nightmare parent.

Even if you believe the Bible, Jesus was nothing special.

How do you cope with a world awash in evil?

Tesla's stock has plummeted in value by $65 billion, echoing the 90% drop in Twitter's value since Musk took over.  The man has a true reverse Midas touch.

Women don't need to explain what they're wearing to random men.

Must-read of the week:  a comprehensive rebuttal of the "Israel is an apartheid state" bullcrap.

An Ohio restaurant declared itself against abortion rights -- and most of its employees walked out.

Don't fall for propaganda about suing corporations.

Our universities have become cesspits of totalitarian stupidity.

Be aware of the pernicious myths supporting the most dangerous cult of our time.

If anybody wants to hire an evil banker, this one is now available.

Anti-mask nonsense is infiltrating hospitals and endangering patients.

An American who survived the Hamas massacre in Israel thought she'd feel safe back in the US.  She was wrong.

The book Gender Queer is full of disgusting twisted pornography and propaganda (warning: seriously disturbing images, even for adults).  This is what many people are claiming should be made available to your kids without your knowledge or consent.  This is an outrage.  These people need to be exposed and stopped.

Bosses are escalating their bullying of work-from-home employees.

Authoritarianism is becoming as pervasive on the left as on the right.

No, the US is not running out of munitions due to sending them to Ukraine.

This apology is bullshit -- if he didn't mean what he said, he wouldn't have said it.

The Republicans are now two parties, pre-Trump and post-Trump.

The president of a Detroit synagogue has been found stabbed to death.

Only a tiny minority of Illinois gun owners are complying with the state's new gun registration law, similar to what happened in New York and Connecticut a few years ago.

You're free to hate, but don't expect others to fund it.

Forced-birthers are completely disgusting.

Fake organs don't work.  Maybe in the future we'll have the technology to do this, but right now that's a long way off.

Gateway Pundit has sunk to a new low, attacking a congressman for reporting a threatening phone call made to his wife.

The campus left has abandoned decency and embraced genocidal anti-Semitism.

Such a compassionate man of faith.

If RFK runs as an independent, he'll probably take more votes from the Republican than from the Democrat.

Turns out giving people opposite-sex hormones nearly doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease.  The usual internet nutbars are not taking it well.

When people say they want genocide, you should believe them.

Here's how a Biden policy changed one man's life.

The garbage Washington Post publishes an admiring profile of a creepy ogler -- and readers call them out.

"To the Palestinians: you have lost all moral authority to claim victimhood.  I will never advocate for you again."

A crude and unreliable lab test is getting women charged with murder more or less at random.

Biden's strong support for Israel is prompting some Republican Jews to give him another look.

Cities are pushing back against swarms of disrespectful tourists.

Murder is still just murder, even if you call it "decolonization".

In the UK, people may soon be sent to prison for saying a man is a man.  Discussion here.

Some lies can never be forgiven -- and £44,868 isn't nearly enough.

"It might seem bizarre that a political party would issue an anti-discrimination policy that breaks anti-discrimination law, but....."

The courage of JK Rowling exposes the cowardice of politicians.

A synagogue in Berlin was firebombed on Wednesday.  Muslim mobs also rioted against police in the city.  But 350 Berliners turned out to act as human shields for another synagogue.

The Polish people, especially the young, are rapidly abandoning the Catholic Church, driven away by endless sex scandals and the Church-linked ruling party's forced-birth policy.

US-supplied ATACMS are making a difference in the Ukraine war.

The US supercarriers recently sent to the eastern Mediterranean are enormously powerful.

Some more here on the Arab Israelis massacred by Hamas.

Here's what's behind the claim that the IDF is using white phosphorus in Gaza.

On Tuesday a jihadist rocket fired at Israel malfunctioned and fell into the parking lot of the al-Ahli hospital in the Gaza Strip.  Hamas claimed that it was an Israeli attack and that the hospital had been destroyed, killing hundreds.  This lie was exposed within hours by analysis of an abundance of evidence, but much of the MSM endorsed it uncritically, even though targeting a hospital would have been far out of character for the IDF.  Even Doctors without Borders echoed the slander.  As late as Thursday, CNN was still describing the explosion as "shrouded in uncertainty".  I agree with this assessment -- the evil, Nazified "woke" types are so committed to the Israel-is-bad narrative that they seize upon any available lie, no matter how implausible, that seems to legitimize it.

Hamas praises its benefactor.

The UN needs to butt out.

An Arab soldier has a message for Hamas.

A historic synagogue in Tunisia has been burned by an Islamist mob.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali explains how Islamism indoctrinates people with hate.

Here's some more of what the Palestinian-flag-waving scum in the West have been glorifying.

This Arab-Israeli hero saved thirty people during the massacre at the music festival.

A powerful member of the Saudi regime has condemned Hamas, though he also tried to both-sides the attack.

I am usually pretty strict about off-topic comments on posts, but there is an exception I need to clarify.

Earlier this week, I left a comment on another person's blog.  I included a brief aside referring to something an earlier commenter had said; I didn't elaborate on it since it would have been off-topic for the post.

The blogger wrote a response implying that my aside had meant something completely different than what I intended (to some extent this was my own fault, insofar as it was so brief that it was open to being misunderstood) -- something that would have been both illogical and unjust to say, if I had indeed meant it.  The blogger also requested that I not comment any further about it, which is reasonable since it would have been off-topic, but this also meant I could not correct the misinterpretation.

If you leave a comment here and my response shows that I have misunderstood what you said, you should feel free to point out the error.  I don't want to misstate your views, even unintentionally.

Spirituality is the only thing uglier than nature.

Even if global-warming denialists "win" the argument, in twenty years their children will curse them for the world they condemned them to live in.

Members of Congress have a duty to do what is best for the country, political parties be damned.  If they'd just remember that, we wouldn't have this interminable mess in the House.

That railgun is cool. The future is finally here.

Now, imagine a bigger, faster gun on something like a nuclear-powered Zumwalt destroyer.

I'm assuming the projectile had to be ferro-magnetic (hence the steel) but would it be possible to use a steel case with a depleted uranium core? Because that would be a seriously bad mother-fucker.

PS. In other tech news we have this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/iKettle-Smarter-Internet-Stainless-Temperature/dp/B0CFRBCQTF/ref=sr_1_17_sspa?keywords=smart%2Bkettle&qid=1698075596&sr=8-17-spons&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.cc223b57-2b86-485c-a85e-6431c1f06c86&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGZfbmV4dA&th=1

Yes, the internet-enabled kettle and it's only GBP129! In principle it is possible to get hacked whilst making tea.

Or at least you need a phone to boil water. When Ugg brought fire into the cave he didn't need a Bluetooth connection.

I took my pun-ishment and enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you for sharing this great list of links. I can always count on your blog to pass along some fun, helpful, and interesting things to "chew-on".

I hope all is well with you. I just stopped by to say Hi and to wish you well.

That is a huge dog, wow.
Influencers are getting in the way of other people trying to buy something or just eat in places. They are setting up their cameras and making videos in very public settings and getting in the way of everyone around them. So I can understand businesses banning them outright.

NickM: I wonder if any other countries are comparably advanced in developing railguns. Japan seems to have a track record of deploying practical technology that the rest of the world can barely understand.

I'm with Ugg. I'll continue making tea with my existing low-tech kettle that just boils water at the press of a button, and won't fire some sort of half-assed tea death ray at me if Hamas managed to hack it.

Dellgirl: Bluebird's blog consistently has a lot of funny stuff. Glad to see you back on the internet.

Mary K: Maybe the business owners can hire that dog to eat the influencers. The latter are getting seriously annoying. Even if I had such a huge number of followers, I would never ask a business for free stuff just in exchange for a mention.

Infidel,
Hamas couldn't hack my old Elonex 386SX. I have ways and means. Basically keep Windows Defender up to date and deploy Privacy Badger and have nothing to do with Norton or McAfee. I run a very austere Win 11.

Oh, and thanks for Clippy ;-) I thought I'd buried that fucker in the grounds of "Bob's House".

NickM: Probably true, on second thought. Hamas specializes in the kind of hacking that's done with machetes.

Mary K: Plenty more of those to come.....
