The world we live in

The bad is real.  The good is real.

I can feel my arteries clogging just looking at this.  Are there seriously people who see such an abomination and think "food"?

I spent eight-plus hours a day for most of the last thirty-plus years in places exactly like this.  I feel physically ill just looking at it.

For what the "exhausted majority" is, see here.

Great collection - I especially love the Dan Barker quote. I hear you about the exhausted majority. I am so tired of the far right minority trashing the rule of law, the elections and the institutions of the US. Terri Gross has a interview on fresh air with Adam Schiff that I heard today which was just amazing. He touches on a lot of the cowardice within the Republican party when it comes to Trump.

I haven't seen that "If you're a (fill in the blank)" sign before. It looks like a few categories have been added. I got a score of 13.

I would have loved to have a cubicle like the one shown. But my office layout is for workers to sit side by side at no-wall work stations like pigs at a trough. Hence my working from home now.

God help me! Seriously. That guy has a lot of things down as sins. At least I don't like country music. If country is a gateway to Hell then I need to get hold of my Dad's old John Denver LPs.

I'm perhaps a bit more nuanced on the manufacturing thing being English - a nation of shop-keepers and all that. But I have to say I was a bit jollied-up when I found a new TV a bit back. Well it was Philips (It's now Nick's!) and designed in the Netherlands and made in Poland. OK, not British but near as dammit (I have Polish rellies and Amsterdam is as easy to get to for me as London). The point though is Europe can design and make high tech stuff and retail it at a price that beats China. Now if Europe can do that... And do that without what essentially ammounts to slavery - they have jail-style suicide nets in Chinese semi-conductor fabs. Anyway, I bought that TV on price/performance and my quids going to folks in friendly and free nations was a very pleasant extra.

There is something here that boils my piss. The Guardian - that bastion of all that is true and lefty always gives top marks to Apple products. Most recently to a Macbook Air Pro for like GBP1249 (inc VAT). They totally fail to mention (a)that's more than twice the price of this here similarly specced ASUS Zenbook (b)no poor sod who built it could even aspire to own one. (b) matters because for all his many faults Henry Ford at least conceived the Model T as something his line-workers could, erm, afford. The Guardian simply buys the shite out Cupertino and wholesales the idea that Apple are all cool and frooby and not at all like evil capitalists such as Dell or HP or ASUS or Acer or... No, they are worse. They do "Think Different" but not in the way they have brain-washed so many. Anyway, fuck it! Give me a C:\ prompt and a star to sail her by any day.

Yesterday, I dismantled my defunct SkyTV box. It had a standard 3.5" Seagate SATA 500GB HD in it. I shall use that for something. I do such things when I am bored and also to know I own the tech and not the other way around.

So many things worth repeating that some of these will appear again in the future, but I must wait a decent amount of time.

I can honestly say my father-in-law didn't demand 100 Philistine foreskins. I think that would have ended matters - I mean you'd wonder what sort of tribe you were getting into?

That's completely true about the cemeteries. Vaccinations save people's lives.

And yes, since I still eat meat most of the meat on that board looked good to me.

Lady M: The exhausted majority includes liberals, conservatives, and what have you -- what unites them is their rejection of the present politics of hysterical polarization and extremists on each side demonizing the other side. I'm certainly ready for that to be over.

Mike: I've seen a few of those signs. I think the aim is to emphasize the "strait is the gate" concept -- everybody's a sinner, nobody's good enough, you're not worthy, blah blah blah, the usual miserable religious crap.

Bluzdude: The bosses are indeed energetic in coming up with ways to make workplaces even more godawful.

NickM: Rich countries can certainly manufacture things. It's more a question of whether people will seek out and buy products made in their own country. Hopefully the recent problems which have revealed the dangers of fragile transoceanic supply chains have woken a few people up.

Ricko: Cross-pollination of ideas is always good.

Mary K: The cemeteries are very telling. It's too bad some of the old diseases are making a comeback now, due to anti-vaxers.

Your response to 3 reminded me of how the Dietary Guidelines for Americans only sampled three studies, and how the sugar industry was right there being pernicious. Also how PETA wants us to live with rats.

In that sense, Jesus was fridged, just really poorly even for a plot device that is never written well.

I'm not a fan of "both sides", and the tankies back Trump anyway. Yeah, if nothing else that should give Glenn Greenwald stans pause.

It's funny, I had chickenpox at 7, before the vaccine. I was constantly at 104-105° fever. (40°C) The pockmarks were everywhere, and I mean everywhere. My dreams were just black and red, and apparently gravity was glitching out because I'd be pulled at angles while standing on the ground. (Hey, my brain was dying.)

The one plus side of this constant tension with China is, industry will have to go somewhere else. Just hopefully not another place with bad labor practices. And Apple is scum: Even in the 80s, they were outsourcing cleaning chips to poor and undocumented families, selling the chips with the contractual obligations to clean them and sell them back to Apple. While bragging about being a completely automated assembly line.

Infidel,
I am not 100% happy with "buy your own countries stuff". I mean, fine, OK but I'm also perfectly happy with buying from friendly, civilized nations. Just as long as they reciprocate.

I mean I have a Japanese camera and a Swiss watch. Fine by me. I like international trade. It means unusual cheese and cars that work. I mean if you think you Americans built some dodgy motors in the '70s and '80s you should check-out the legacy of the likes of British Leyland. Just Google "Austin Allegro". Yes, it did have a square steering wheel and also a disturbing tendancy to shed its rear wheels at motorway speeds. And it was slower than fuck and uglier than bestiality. Beatiality with a toad. And if you really want to wake-up shrieking in inchoate terror image search the Vanden Plas model. I doubt anybody ever made something so hideous since Victor Frankenstein. He was fiction. The Allegro, alas, wasn't.

Granny: Please steal away.....

NickM: I'm not an absolutist on the subject. But experience has shown that it's unwise to become dependent on unreliable trans-oceanic supply chain, and especially on trade with gangster-states. Just look at the problems in Europe now because of dependence on Russian natural gas. The recent "Inflation Reduction Act" here included provisions to encourage more manufacturing domestically of things we now import from China, and I think this is a wise move.
