Quote for the day -- a matter for civil disagreement?
-- Senator James Eastland, 1956, quoted in Master of the Senate by Robert Caro
Sorry, this guy was just not the right choice to use as an example of being able to work civilly with someone you "disagree" with. He just wasn't, and choosing him to serve as such an example was an alarming blunder.
I understand that Biden has apologized. I'm still not sure he realizes that this was a mistake on his part, and not just a matter of people unreasonably taking offense. It's a valid concern about a person who has a real chance of becoming our nominee to run against Trump.

Joe tried too hard to ‘reach out’ across the aisle.
There’s no ‘reaching out’ to racist, sexist, xenophobic and corrupt politicians. Also, see republicans.
XoXo
I think you can reach out to some folks, but James Eastland is not one of those people.
Eastland was reprehensible and doubtlessly said many equivalent things. It does appear that Caro had that quote wrong.
It seems to have come from a pamphlet distributed at an anti-integration rally in 1956. One Wikipedia researcher does say that Eastland was present at that rally.
Your point about the lack of wisdom in using Eastland as an example still stands, but the quote itself does not support it.
Touche. Outstanding arguments. Keep up the good work.
