Electronic vision for the blind

The Argus II system, developed in California, uses a tiny camera mounted on a pair of glasses to feed signals to electrodes implanted in the retina. It has already been used successfully in humans and more comprehensive tests are about to begin.

The resolution is very poor compared with natural vision, but it works well enough to enable people to do things like avoid obstacles while walking. More advanced versions are in development.
