Individualist, pro-technology, pro-democracy, anti-religion. I speak only for myself and not for any ideology, movement, or party. It has been my great good fortune to live my whole life free of "spirituality" of any kind. I believe that evidence and reason are the keys to understanding reality; that technology rather than ideology or politics has been the great liberator of humanity; and that in the long run, human intelligence is the most powerful force in the universe.
God doesn't exist
Evolution happened
Global warming is real
Homosexuality is normal
Aging is a curable disease
The election was not stolen
Everything "spiritual" is a lie
Free speech is for everybody
Humans do not have "souls"
Men can't become women
Fetuses are not persons
Words are not violence

I first visited the USA in 1996. My first port of call was Atlanta, GA. Like all large-ish US cities it's a mixed bag of assorted fruits. I stayed at my then GFs Dad's house. It was a slightly creepy antebellum style place in the posh end of North Atlanta. The houses around were similar. Many of them flew the Stars and Stripes and the Confederate Battle Banner (it is not the Cionfederate flag) alongside each other. I suffered secondary cognitive dissonance.
My GF just assured me this was normal for Georgia, wait 'till you see the boonies...
Which I did. I can attest to the truth that Atlanta is a "Northern City" that happens to be in the South.
The Florida pan-handle is also not for the faint of heart. It was assumed (more than once) I was homosexual but that was OK because I was English and everything they knew about England came from Hugh Grant movies. You, know, like the romantic comedies where he isn't gay. But facts don't matter when your meta-story works better. OK, I did have floppy hair an English accent and wore a velvet jacket. But I was with a woman. And we had a .38 in the glove box of the Honda.
Always a few good ones to steal for future use.
NickM: I know it's technically the "battle flag", but everybody calls it the Confederate flag now.
Flying the Confederate flag and the US flag together is indeed bizarre, but you have to remember that these people are (a) idiots and (b) grossly ignorant of history beyond a superficial and error-riddled caricature. They really don't see any contradiction in calling themselves patriots while waving the flag of traitors who tried to break up the country.
