Link round-up for 14 August 2022

Various interesting stuff I ran across on the net over the last week.

She's a tigress of math, highly motivated.

The forces of evil confront defeat (you may need to be British to get some of the references).

All those cartoon animals raise disturbing issues.

Let the needs of your soul guide you.

Laughing, yes, but not at her.

I have my doubts about this philosophy.

Odd clocks here.

Never forget to stop for pedestrians at the crosswalk.

Religionists freak out over a spiritual bikini.

The FBI raid on Trump sets a dangerous precedent.

Vroom!

Meta's new "chatbot" knows a bad guy when it sees one (link from commenter NickM).

Venture out -- it may not be as scary as you think.

What a croc.

Remember the first real action heroine.

God has his priorities.

Somebody should actually produce this T-shirt.

SickoRicko observes World Elephant Day, and remembers Olivia Newton-John.

Rain!

Awesome spider.

Be realistic about retirement.  Live your dream, not someone else's.

They just can't stop him from flying.

See California aqueducts.

Those who want to create great literature must understand what makes it great.

In sexuality, the opposite of "kinky" isn't "vanilla" -- it's connected.

Nobody should ever write about anything bad.

Religion should get out of the way and let science help people.

We're getting closer to figuring out how life began.

The US can't have a civil war.

Serves you right, jackass.

Here's how modern torpedoes work.

A new drug is proving effective at stopping antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Iguanas are not pets.  Seriously, this is terrible for both them and us.

Every cryptocurrency exchange in the US is under SEC investigation.  Dare we hope this scam is going to get shut down for good?

A new book tells the story of abortion clinic escorts, who play a vital role in assuring access to abortion (I did this for a while in 2003-2004).

The rise in the practice of anal "sex" among heterosexuals is leading to injuries, disease, and other medical problems in women.

If you practice backyard farming for food, you need to read this.

The delusion that humans have souls plays a role in pro-forced-birth attitudes.

Rushdie is now off the ventilator and able to speak.

For better or worse, Americans' rejection of traditional adulthood is following in the footsteps of one of the world's most successful societies (link from NickM).

Stop writing women out of history.

In 32 of the 50 states, more than half the population never or almost never attends religious services.

A restaurant owner berates his customers for..... the fact that he doesn't pay his staff enough (found via Miss Cellania).

Should've just left this guy in the loony bin.

What is the essence of Elon Musk?

They are doing hysterectomies on children now.  Not Germany in 1942, the US in 2022.

The list of recent Democratic accomplishments is impressive.  I also note this comment:  ".....negativism and cynicism are roadmaps to defeat: they discourage voting and become self-fulfilling prophecies."  Evidently I'm not the only one who has noticed this.

Starbucks is run by anti-union assholes.  Get your coffee somewhere else until they clean up their act.

Free speech for all, without apology.

Test your Bible knowledge.

Misogyny is disgusting, whether in modern societies or traditional ones.

JK Rowling has received a death threat on Twitter for her support for Rushdie.  Twitter is doing nothing, just as with all the countless earlier death threats she's received.

Green Eagle and Shaw Kenawe review right-wing sites' reactions to the Mar-a-Lago raid.  Also check out the comments on this post.  It's a real freak-out.

Reactions to the raid from sane people here.

Here's an overview of the laws that might apply to Trump's taking of government documents (link from Annie).

Some wingnuts are talking war, but it's just talk.

Some of Trump's allies are edging away from him after the revelations of the raid.

Senate bill 4102 could make life easier for people with disabilities.

"Anyone who lectures you to 'be kind' will very soon tell you what lie you are supposed to learn and regurgitate."

America claims to value families and children, but needs to put its money where its mouth is.

Out-of-touch bosses continue to fume over remote work, while workers continue to embrace it.

No, increased IRS funding won't mean more audits for the middle class.

Humans are hard-wired from a very early age to recognize which sex other people are.

The attack on Rushdie was exactly in line with the "words are violence" mentality.  All those who defend or support using violence or threats in response to "offensive" speech are disgusting evil filth.

A Michigan town voted to defund its own library because some people were upset about gay- and trans-oriented books being available there.  This is the town public library, not a school library.  A public library is supposed to make a wide range of viewpoints available, not exclude things that any particular person or group objects to.  A donation page to support the library has been set up.

No matter what you think, you are not a true follower of God.

This is trans ideology in a nutshell.

Anti-vaxers form a population of easy marks for a wide range of scams.

Trump is "a uniquely tiresome individual."

Facebook will betray you if you use it to pursue abortion in a forced-birth state.  But just deleting your social media accounts may not be enough to protect you.

What about spaces for women to exist safely?

A Christian school kicks out a five-year-old because her parents are a same-sex couple.

They need us more than we need them.

Trump's true fascistic nature shows up most clearly in his view of the military.

The closure of the Tavistock in the UK will have repercussions in the US as well.  As the tide turns against trans ideology, remember the brave people who fought the good fight.

As mainstream Democrats repudiate "defund the police", wingnuts embrace it.

Darwinfish 2 looks at the Kansas referendum, Republican self-pwnage, and the death of Olivia Newton-John.

The Inflation Reduction Act promotes economic nationalism, another signal that the US is reclaiming a leadership role after the isolationism of the Trump years.

Here are the world's best and worst cities to live in -- no surprises.  The best in North America have something in common.

One of the whistleblowers at the Tavistock tells her story.

The Tavistock is facing mass legal action from as many as a thousand families of its victims.

At the time of Rushdie's knighthood in 2007, Christopher Hitchens told some stark truths (must-watch).

British universities are removing books from reading lists if they contain themes that might make students uncomfortable.  In fact, the entire country of France now requires a trigger warning.  Don't they realize those students will need to go out and deal with the actual real world at some point?

71% of Australians say religion is not important to them; only 15% claim to be active members of a religious group.

In Australia, it's now against the law for lesbians to exclude men from their social events.

Wildfires have been raging all over France under the horrific heat wave brought by global warming.

The 101st Airborne is returning to Europe to support eastern NATO members against Russian bullying.

Olga Bykovskaya has been identified as the Russian woman recorded encouraging her soldier husband to rape Ukrainian women earlier in the war.

That Ukrainian attack on a Crimean airfield did the Russian military a lot of damage.  Some pictures from the attack here.  It's a further sign of the turning of the tide in Ukraine's favor.

Partisan resistance in occupied Ukraine helps the liberation effort (found via Reaganite Independent).

The Russian military is dependent on Western technology.  Exports of chips should be shut off immediately.

Anti-Putin Russians burned down a conscript barracks in Moscow (found via Hackwhackers).

Women in Afghanistan protest the medievalism of the Taliban, who of course respond with violence.

The Beijing regime is losing its power to bully other countries into kowtowing to its claim over Taiwan.

My posts this week:  the Mar-a-Lago raid, a rap battle from American history, an image round-up, and the latest outrageous act of religious violence.

o o o o o

I urge everyone not to worry much about the wingnut threats of mass violence or civil war if Trump is arrested or sent to prison.  Various brands of wingnuts have been publicly airing such fantasies since The Turner Diaries was published, if not before, and hardly anything ever actually happens.  We get an incident as major as Oklahoma City or January 6 maybe once a decade, and even those were nowhere near being a mass uprising or a civil war.  Mostly it's just fiascos like the nail-gun guy or that bird sanctuary kiosk take-over in 2016.  Yeah, the wingnuts fart pretty good, but they don't have the shit to back it up.

When I first heard "100% private currency" I said "Like Disney Dollars, right?" No, crypto is even dumber.

Thanks for using my links.

I have always thought Ripley was utterly badass and (sorry Bruce - I just don't swing your way!) the single sexiest thing in the Universe wearing a dirty vest and carrying a gun. And I remember the first time I saw Lt. Ripley in the power-loader (way back - on a 14" TV via VHS) and that absolute killer line, "Get away from her you bitch!".

But then there was always this...

Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed.... 'But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.

I have a weakness for shield maidens et al. So, you can imagine how I felt about this:

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/joan-arc-portrayed-nonbinary-new-production-londons-globe-theatre-rcna42968

And I'm coming from an English perspective. Ripley and Éowyn (and so many others...) are cut from a cloth that was marked out by Jeanne d'Arc.

Heroines need to be female because they are.

Anon: It's not only dumb, it's dishonestly named. A currency should ideally be stable in value, not fluctuate wildly. It's basically a speculative investment and most people who are into it treat it as such.

NickM: Sigourney Weaver made that character absolutely iconic. It's a performance that will live as long as movies are still watched.

It's ironic that Tolkein is criticized for not writing strong female characters. It's true that he had few female characters, but they are there.

This effort to write women out of history by retconning important women from earlier centuries as men or "non-binary" just shows how gender ideology has reached the point of self-parody. You read this stuff and it's literally almost impossible to tell whether it's real or something from The Onion.

Daal: Always proud to have helped! I think the issue with urban gardening and toxic soil is to do with the urban environment, not something specific to Australia. It would probably be equally true of cities here.

What's funniest are NFTs. It reminds me of how back in the 80s, people found comics like Action Comics 1 and Detective Comics 27 were worth a pretty penny. You know, one's from the 30s and 40s which premiered iconic characters. (I just listed Superman and Batman's first appearances )

So they bought up new comics hoping for the same return on investment.

The industry responded in kind, trying to make each issue seem special, and printing millions more than before, under the logic that speculators would buy more, and especially with gimmick covers.

This actually bankrupted Marvel.

Marvel are going to do it again - kinda. I mean just how big is the Marvel Universe these days? They may well become the first company to go bust not so much by violating the laws of economics but those of cosmology.

I mean what the in the blue fuck is this about...

If that ain't a shark jump I'm Batman.

Anon: They should have realized that making rarity commonplace wasn't going to work.

NickM: That trailer does look pretty dire, but I think the whole superhero thing is exhausted. These completely formulaic franchise movies vacuum up hundreds of millions of production dollars every year. What originality and imagination can be found must be sought in films from smaller companies, often from other countries. And don't even get me started on the godawful Rings of Power abomination that Amazon is about to vomit up onto the world.

Oh, well, I still have my pre-Star-Wars-era movies on DVD, unchanged by the rot.

This is literally She-Hulk's thing though: she's always broken the fourth wall. (She once borrowed a shirt from her boyfriend because hers was blasted off and she needed a shirt to fight but he didn't because of the Comics Code Authority.)

Deadpool does as well, of course, because "Deathstroke knockoff but without any living relatives even though the only thing interesting about Deathstroke is his kids" only goes so far.

Great round-up, as always! The story of the five-year-old child being kicked out of a Christian school simply because her parents are a same-sex couple is (albeit not surprising) very heartbreaking.

Anon: I'm not all that familiar with most of the superheroes, especially their modern incarnations. The concept is just way to dominant in today's movie scene.

Ricko: We need to get tougher on shitty drivers. And some of those crocodiles are practically dinosaurs.

Martha: Funny how many modern Christians are making Christianity a religion of excluding and rejecting people. That's what it's all about, I guess.

On the hysterectomies on children at Boston Children’s Hospital:

If it is true, it is a horrific story.

Earth-Bound Misfit has done some research and says it isn't.

PolitiFact seems to support her.

Worth investigating.
Glad you brought it up.

I'm aware that they are denying it (and will be mentioning this in the next link round-up). They are still telling blatant lies on other matters. And other forms of surgical mutilation, such as mastectomies, are performed on "trans" minors at some institutions (I don't know whether BCH is one of them), so the original accusation was hardly implausible.
