Video of the day -- the tazing of a wingnut

This individual is probably a member of a particular subculture of wingnuts who call themselves "sovereign citizens", who have developed a whole weird elaborate theory of jurisdictions and "rights" and special meanings of various words, all of which they basically made up out of thin air but which they claim has objective reality. What it boils down to is, they have the "right" to hassle and abuse people and basically do anything they want, and nobody else has any right to stop them. They've become known for clogging up the court system with meaningless paperwork full of their gibberish.  But spouting jargon does not immunize you from the consequences of your own behavior, as this individual discovered.  More here, here, and here.

I saw this a while back, and the idiot just kept pushing it. I've met a sovereign citizen, who tried to persuade me, and it's just as nutty as you'd think. It's based on a misreading of the constitution, some misrepresentations of Supreme Court law, a hefty dose of conspiracy theories, along with more than a little paranoia and tax dodging.

The hypocrisy of these sovereign citizens, anti-government and Tea Party nuts always amazes me. They have no problem using taxpayer/government funded services as long as somebody else pays for them.

On the other hand, I am very uncomfortable with the apparent militarization of police agencies since 9/11. Many local jurisdictions seem to feel that the Patriot Act granted them new and special powers. Particularly disconcerting are the actions taken by police against citizens filming their actions in public. The courts have continually upheld the rights of citizens to video police in public and yet the police continue to violate those rights.

Increasingly civilian venues like concerts subject people to searches. And now the DoD considers any form of protest as "low-level terrorism".

A while back, the SPLC Intelligence Report published a feature on the Sovereign Citizens movement, including some of its more dangerous members.

This is how crazy movements can turn into crazier, and more dangerous, movements. The National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP) AKA Nazis, began as a small group of nutty fanatics in the early 1920's. It wasn't until the 1930's when they were taken seriously. We all know what happened after that.

Norbrook: These guys don't seem to grasp the point that their claims have no practical value if no one around them accepts them.

RtS: Police abuse of power is a genuine problem, and I've sometimes called attention to it in the link round-ups, but I don't see how that issue arises here. "Robert" made it clear he was going to continue to be disruptive, and the guards refrained from using any force at all until he tried to push into an area where he'd been repeatedly told cameras weren't allowed.

Ahab: Thanks. A frightening story, and these guys are even loonier than I thought.

MS: It's disquieting that there might be as many as 300,000 of these people. That's a pretty big movement for something so dangerously deranged.

JJ: He's out of touch with reality, all right!

Anon: Maybe so -- if he were black or a Muslim, they might well have zapped him sooner instead of putting up with his bullshit for so long.
